WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Fucking hell! Bendtner manages to beat Dawson once in the air in the first half and what does he do? Whenever we went on the attack and they hit us on the break it was another fucking goal because we weren't prepared for it. Nightmare. Igor Stepanovs, Pascal Cygan, Gus Caesar, Phillipe Senderos, George Wood. Tonight we played like they were all out there.

We were awful, the Spuds - I hate to admit - took the opportunity to wipe the floor with us. Begrudgingly, they even played quite well. Now more of today's Gooners will ave some idea what it was like to be an Arsenal fan in the 60s - the Spuds scored 5 pretty often - sometimes a lot more: 9 v Notts F, 10 v Everton, 13 v Crewe. I also think we need to assess the whole season not just one competition - The Carling Cup was always a nursery school and in that it's been effective. I'll stick by Arsene. All in all, much as I'd like to have been at SHL, this was a night better spent in front of the box with a glass or two of red wine than dodging thugs on the Tottenham High Rd. And we're still having a better season than they are :( :( :(

This has proved what a few of us have said since August.....this squad is nowhere near good enough  I do not give a flying fuck if I am labelled as a victor meldrew by everyone in the world but this performance and scoreline is unacceptable. I believed after the 1st leg we would get knocked out tonight and I said today that I would accept that as long as the effort and commitment was at a proper level - it wasnt even close

I have criticised le boss before much to the annoyance of some but the ball is firmly in his court now.....buy in some players(and indeed ship out some deadwood like bert) or do nothing and watch your season go up in smoke. If he fails to address these glaring shortcomings in the squad and our early season run gets wasted on the run in then I am sorry but wenger's head should be on a stick. Yes he has done an outstanding job but his refusal to bring in players allied to his over-loyalty to some players cannot be ignored any longer.

As I stated above losing to the y*ds tonight in a mickey mouse cup with only 3 of our 1st team starting is no big deal - getting an arse kicking clearly is a big deal though. In the next few days we will without doubt take some stick(9 years worth to be precise) from their scum and it is important that we remind them all this was largely our 2nd team playing in a cup that we consider only marginally more important than the charity shield

I WAS OF A SIMILAR MIND AND WAS GOING TO DO A THREAD ABOUT IT. MY HEART WANTS EVERTON TO WIN BUT I FEAR THAT - UNLIKE CHELSEA - THEY WON'T BE STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD OFF THE RESURGENT SPUDS.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I ALMOST NEVER WANT CHELSEA TO WIN AND THE THOUGHT OF AN ALL LONDON FINAL INVOLVING THOSE TWO IS HORRIFYING BECAUSE I WOULD THEN BE COMPELLED TO WANT THE CHAVS TO WIN.   :x  FECKING DILEMAS, EH?

PS I am glad magic hat that you can deal with this by describing it as a one off poor performance  It's like even in the poor run of form we have been on of late you still didnt see this coming  Of course any criticism of the squad by you would be hypocritical seeing as you have stated since August that our squad is good enough

Yes I was the persom who dubbed you with the Victor Meldrew tag Augie but I agree with you all the way!

It is not the fact that our "squad" lost to Tottenahm it is the fact that "our squad" lost to a mid-table Spuds side so heavily!

If anyone still disgarees that our sqaud is too thin then did the comment at the start of the game "this is one of the only cases where injuries have forced a club to field a stronger team" not hit home?

No cntre backs, a French international down, a young man struggling, a comlete loss of impetus and still we have " a great desire and massive potential"!

Sorry but the minority was right and have bben right since August!

hoyte is a hero just for that tackle on keane i hate him! spurs were better team tonight but scoreline pissed me off cos makes out they were amazin rather than we were fukin shit. i will settle for them winning every 21 games, cos form is temporary class is permanent. let them have their 15mins of fame, we are still the best team in london, if chelski chavski do get into the final then lets hope both teams kick the shit out of each other :D

Well a 5-1 defeat hurts, no matter which team we are playing or against who in whichever competition. Having said that, there is no need to dwell too hard on it, no defeat is good but this is a part of football and you have to accept it and everyone will agree that we needed a wake up call and the Carling Cup was the ideal place to get it in. I would expect the players (the younger ones specially) to learn more from a defeat like this than a victory. They will be hurt and hopefully they will be more determined and hungry to do well in the more important competitions. Having said that, its possible it might bring about a dip in form as happened at the end of the 49 game streak, but then the feelings there was more of being robbed than anything else. So I dont expect a similar backlash but a positive one.

So I say bring on Newcastle. It wont be an easy game with the possibility of the new manager syndrome kicking in for them, but with the fire raging inside the lads, hopefully it will transfer on to the field and if it does, last night might just be the turning point of our season and ofcourse in the best manner.

yeah I expected us to lose. This badly? No, not even Spurs fans could ever see this coming. We had a poor run of form in late Dec, though right now 11 games unbeaten, but have been winning again recently but yeah, we are only joint top of the table and got to semi's of a cup with our second string, why ever would I be willing to not think that will sum up our season.

Of more concern to me is our habit of drawing away games rather then winning them. Not a need for a stronger 7th choice centreback, 3rd choice keeper or a 5th choice striker, could use some strengthening in midfield though

Honestly? We will need a new keeper to replace Jens but that is for the summer, we have three fine rb's, could use a loan at left back cover but how would that affect Traore's development? If he is to be better then Clichy as some think he can be then would rather we let that happen by any means necessary. I'm confident at our cb cover up to the point we are calling on Hoyte but that will be a rare thing. Our strike force of Ade, Van Persie, Dudu and Bentender haven't let us down so far this season

So midfield. Right is fine, Eboue has done pretty well there and I still have faith in Walcott but we could use left wing cover, another attacking midfielder and perhaps cover for Flamini since we lost Diarra but then we would have 4 in the position so someone has to go or Gilberto pick up form. Sure, we could use additions to the squad but a second string that can get to semi finals is hardly going to get us in trouble.

Agree with you entirely Augie - the Boss really fucked up last night. I didnt expect us to win last night but not humiliated especially to that fucking lot. I could have swallowed 2-0 but 5-1 is a fucking disgrace by our standards. And I think we will be the same against Newcastle.

We will have a far stronger side out for the Fa Cup and didn't our useless second string beat them 2-0?
