The worst hammering you've seen

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The worst hammering you've seen

Post by Cus Geezer »

With regards to last night's early leavers.

I can't relate to those who leave early.

But at the same time I can't relate to watching an Arsenal game and being on the receiving end of a hammering.

My first ever game in 1985 came a week after losing 6-1 to Everton but I'm really lucky in that the worst hammering I've seen was losing 3-1 to Newcastle and in this respect it was 1-1 until about 83 minutes so not really a hammering at all.

So what is the worst hammering you've seen boys?

THE WORST HAMMERING I'VE SEEN WAS WHEN TRYING TO PUT SOME NORMAL NAILS IN A CONCRETE WALL IN ORDER TO PUT SOME PICTURES UP!! FOR SOME REASON IT JUST DOESN'T WORK WITHOUT BENDING THE NAILS!!

BEING SERIOUS FOR A MINUTE, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE THE .... GULP..... 5-0 BEATING WE TOOK AT THE LANE IN 1983!!

My worst one has to be Spartak Moscow at home about 82, they murdered us that night, think the final score was 2-5 and they got a standing ovation off the pitch from everyone at Highbury. A worse scoreline was the 6-2 at home to the manc vermin but thet did'nt outclass us in the same way that Spartak did.

CHARLIE,

WAS GOING TO WRITE EXACTLY THE SAME THING IN MY LAST POST AS AN EXTRA MEMORY TO MY SPUDS EXPERIENCE.

IT WAS IN SEASON 1982/83 AND AFTER LOSING THE FIRST (AWAY) LEG 3-2, WE THOUGHT WE WERE FAVOURITES TO PROGRESS. ALAS IT WASN'T TO BE AND WE GOT STUFFED 5-2. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AT A MATCH THAT AN OPPOSITION SIDE HAVE TAKEN MY BREATH AWAY WITH THEIR PERFORMANCE AND THE QUALITY OF THEIR FOOTBALL.

THE LESSON IN FOOTBALL WE GOT THAT NIGHT STILL LIVES WITH ME AS A MEMORY MORE THAN 25 YEARS LATER.

I'm with OTO2, Charlton being 1-4 up at half time was a joke, it was my first visit to Highbury that season too.

They seemed like they were from a totally different footballing planet did'nt they. All their players could play with the ball at their feet, move pass, create space etc etc, basically, everything that we could'nt do at that point in history, we had Lee Fuckin Chapman in our side at the time and that says it all. At that time if we were getting a bad beating at home by another English club I would probably have gone to the green hut at the back of the north bank to get a beer but they were so good I just stood there mesmorised. As you sa, IHH, that night still lives in my memory as well and until I go old and senile (next year sometime) I always will.
