Arsenal pair escape FA punishment

The Football Association will not take any formal action against Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner for their altercation.

The pair squared up to each other in the second half of Tuesday's 5-1 Carling Cup semi-final second leg defeat against Tottenham.

However, the FA will write to both Gunners players to remind them of their responsibilities.

Adebayor had earlier apologised for the incident on the club's website.

"We are both passionate about this club, but it was a mistake. I am sorry," he said following the incident which left Bentner with a cut nose.

"We should have been more calm during the game and although I was pleased to get a goal back for the team when I came on, I am sorry for the disagreement with my team-mate Nicklas."

Arsenal were 4-1 down when the incident happened, and substitute Adebayor had been on the pitch for only 21 minutes.

The Togo international had made an impact on the game within eight minutes of his arrival when he scored Arsenal's only goal.

However, frustrations later boiled over and tempers flared within the Arsenal team as Tottenham romped to their first win over their north London rivals in nine years.

Gunners skipper William Gallas and referee Howard Webb intervened, but the match official did not see the entire incident and neither did Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The incident was also seen by Matthieu Flamini, who shouted pleas to his team-mates to calm down from the substitutes bench.

It is not the first time that team-mates have been involved in an altercation on the pitch.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were sent off after brawling at St James' Park in 2005 when they were playing for Newcastle, who had fallen 3-0 behind to Aston Villa.

Seven years ago Bradford's Stuart McCall had to have stitches in a facial wound after Andy Myers struck him just before half-time of the 6-1 defeat to Leeds.

And in 1995, Blackburn team-mates David Batty and Graeme Le Saux came to blows during a Champions League match against Spartak Moscow.

I don't see why they think Bendtner should be punished anyway.. but good news i suppose.

Well technically under FA rules, and I could be wrong here, I don't think they could do much anyway. The referee was aware of the incident and dealt with it as he saw fit. Under FA rules dealing with it includes taking no action. As the FA guidelines state that they will not enter into retrospective refereeing then how could they have dealt with it anyway?

I suppose the 'disripute' chestnut could have raised its head but that cannot carry a suspension or anything can it? I'm sure that only incurs a fine. Again I could be wrong. Any thoughts?

I'm sure that as our resident expert Smoothie can enlighten us further.

Yup, definitely good news. Though I hope the club have a real go at both players behind the scenes.

As for Bendtner, perhaps he didn't deserve punishment by the FA but the sight of one Arsenal player complaining vehemently to the referee about one of his team-mates was very poor. And according to at least one report, Bendtner was the first one to get physical when he apparently "raked Adebayor's achilles". In any event, one team-mate grassing up another is out of order. Bendtner might be more sinned against than sinning in this case but he needs to learn a bit more about being part of a team, something he's been reluctant to show much of either for Arsenal or Denmark.

Maybe not but if you read the top post it says he intervened. I assume he must have seen something to need to intervene.

Going on past experiences i'd say that there is not a team in the league that has not had a little argument between its players during training. Unless there is blood spilled it's all forgotten about fairly quick. The fact that it was public blows it out of all proportion. [smilie=row1_18.gif] what on earth does this emoticon mean?

The FA might not have taken any action but the club must do something. They MUST hammer Adebayor. He is getting a little too big for his boots. Away at Newcastle with Rosicky and now this.... he needs bringing back down to earth.

They showed a different clip on ITV the next day after the Chelsea Vs Everton game. It clearly showed what happened and Adebayor is a very lucky man.

It doesn't show a clip of the heels or anything close. Adebayor rushes 10 yards over to Bendtner clouts him round the side of the head. Shoved his face into Bendtners and nudges and then grabs Bendtner around the throat and shoves him.

We are lucky that Bendtner didn't take a swing at him there and then. Most people would have done.

This was all shown on ITV and if the FA have seen it i cannot believe that we got away with it.

Glad we did but still cannot believe it.

Wenger has got to have words with Ade as he was completely out of order. You cannot hear what was said but Bendtner doesn't look to have done anything wrong. Wenger will have to be very careful limiting the damage to our team spirit.
