The worst hammering you've seen

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Is there any TV footage of that Spartak game.

I've heard it described as such elsewhere, never seen any footage.

Does it exist?

6 - 1 away to the Mancs (2001 I think).

We knew we were falling behind them again, but if we could just get ahead of steam up with this result....oh for bollocking arse wipes sake.

Now THAT was awful.

And don't even get me started on the 'performance' of one Igors Stepanov that day.

As far as I rememeber I've never seen it again on tv but as it was such a long time ago now I could be wrong about that. I'm sure it must have been on tv at the time so maybe film of it does exist. I think it's the one and only time I saw an away side actually cheered off the pitch after beating us at home, they really were that good and once you got past the pissed off that we'd lost feeling when the result was beyond us, you just stood back and admired them.

I remember the 2-5 against Spartak. But much as they played very well I also remember Terry Neill panicking at 0-1 and sacrificing defence for all out attack too early in the game. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but weren't we 2-0 up in the away leg before losing 2-3?

Other bad memories of hammerings from games attended were the already mentioned 0-5 at WHL (easily the worst!!), 1-4 v Man Utd (in League Cup semi final 1st leg) and another 1-4 v Ipswich in the league. There was also that strange game against Boro a few years back, which we dominated and restricted them to about one shot on goal but contrived to lose 0-3!!

That said, I was at Villa Park when we won 6-2 (Tony Woodcock scoring 5) and at Highbury when we beat Leeds 7-0 in the League Cup (when it was still an important competition!). And that was at a time when we were supposed to be crap. Let's face it we've given out many many more tonkings than we've received - so shouldn't feel too sorry for ourselves for what happened earlier in the week!!!

You're right, we were 2-0 up in the first leg and you have a point about the panic after conceding the first goal at home but nothing can take away from the way that Spartak too advantage of that and the unusual reaction of everyone at Highbury that night at the end. It'll stay long in my memory.

thankfully in my time going 2 the arsenal, ive only witnessed about 5 or 6 defeats, but id say the inter game in aug 2003, was the worst. i arrived 20 mins late, still 0-0, though ok, ended up loseing 0-3, wished ida missed the whole 90 mins.
