Having Jack sit deeper allows the headed knock-down from our centre backs to go to a player with a good first touch and a quick turn to recycle the possesion immediately into an attacking move. Song turns like an aircraft carrier in comparison.

That's the theory anyway, plus Boomer's 'pressure higher up' thing about Song.

It's very nouveau-tactique.

What has impressed me about Song, is his calm finishing, he doesn't get too many chances, but when he does he keeps a cool head and picks his spot, and at a crucial time in games.
Where as Jack has a tendancy to lash at his chances and has been a bit wasteful. So I'm happy enough for now to see Song push up and Jack sit back, until he gets a bit more experience.

I just dont get it Sid.... Song is a big fucker who can tackle and head where as Jack is smaller but as skillful as pretty much any player in the squad, surely it makes sense for Song to hold and protect the back 4 and let Jack off the lead and create for the forwards

I agree, he actually looks quite assured when doing the one-twos in the box. Like an assured tank.

I'm sure Jack will get more composed with age, he's still awfully young.

I see what you're saying Flash, but Jack can tackle as well, I do sometimes think that with him, Cesc and Nasri all going forward, they can be a bit too similar, and get in each others way. Where Song's strength offers something different. And as I said it seems to be paying dividends with him scoring important goals.
I think what is more of a problem is when the "nutty prof" leaves both of them out of the team, like he did at Wigan.

Eh ? Are you sure flash ? Anytime I have seen song he couldnt tackle to take the ball away from a child  Such is his crappiness in the tackle that he commits more needless free kicks and gets so many cheap bookings

Yeah, I don't especially rate his tackling ability, though when playing up the pitch all he needs to do is pressure the opposition into making an error, or playing hoof ball which leads to defender knock-down, Wilshere recycle.

This, of course, relies heavily on our defence winning the high ball.....

Yeah, tackling is one of the things Song needs to work on most. Too often he just bundles into the player like a drunk toddler who’s only just learnt to waddle but hasn’t figured out how to stop yet.

Have to say though I agree with Bournemouth that against the Chavs & 2nd half v Birmingham Song was much more impressive. Seemed to be prioritising his role as the midfield anchor & we looked more solid for it, amongst other reasons obviously. And the goal v the Chavs just proves he can do that & still get forward when need be, it’s just about picking the right moments & not getting carried out to sea by the tide like he usually does.

I can't think of any team in history where the more creative player of two has been used as the holding player.

You need only basic football skills to get rid of knock-downs in and around your own area - you need that something a little bit special to create up the other end tho.

I've seen Yaya playing the high pressure with Iniesta sitting deep for Barca.

pirlo, guardiola and xavi alonso spring to mind immediately
deep lying creators with harder working players in front of them

Song and Yaya are different players.

Yaya is a box-to-box beast with a great engine. Song is a sitting defensive midfielder and always has been till this season.
