Live Away Screenings

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Live Away Screenings

Post by sithegooner »

Has anybody on here been to one of these? I'm just wondering if it's worth the money or should I stick to the dodgy satellite down the local pub?? 8)

There was a really good article in the Gooner about the screening of the Burnley game last year.

It's the screening difference between the old North Bank and club level.

As nice as the surroundings are you can't really let loose and enjoy the game like you can in the surrounding pubs that show it on the satellite.

Basil's right, it has gone up in price. Must be the old VAT line.

Its ok actually but a bit more staid than a pub. And i only went for the Birmingham game last year so bad memories of Almunia's morris dancing ...

But VAT has gone up by 2.5% whereas the ticket price has gone up by 60%, so it can't be that surely?  :? :?  :banghead: :banghead:

So whats the deal with this then, how often do the Arsenal screen away games? Just wondering because Quinny has been making a big deal about people watching matches (home as well as away right enough) in the pubs recently, and I have often wondered why he doesn't just screen the away matches and at least get some of the people to spend their money in the SoL rather than the pubs. Do you know if it costs Arsenal shit loads to screen the matches, and is there a rule whereby you can only (or can't or whatever) broadcast Saturday 3pm games?

It's very rare, about 3 times a season, in the club level.

It never seems to be a side within 100 miles of Arsenal and they probably wait for it to sell out.

If Quinn's got a problem he should be reminded that the channel showing it is within the EU and perfectly legal to view it within the rule of free movement of goods and services.

If it's effecting Sunderland maybe their prices are uncompetitive.

cheers. aye, its a bit of a hot topic at the minute. tbh some of the pubs wont be showing a european broadcaster that they have a subscription for, and so will be in the wrong, but you're right enough about those that are. IIRC the judgment on the trial case is due any time (I think it was expected a few days ago actually, but i havent heard of any outcome), and it will be very interesting to see what happens if they find in favour of the pub owner (which i would have thought they will have to, unless they want to pick and choose when to allow free trade in europe!), Sky will go into meltdown and they might actually have to start charging a fair price!

Does piss me off that we have to pay through the nose for what is very limited coverage in Britain, whereas foreigners can watch as many of our games as they want live for very little, so I'm hoping the ruling is against Sky.

I think SAFC prices are competitive (amongst the cheapest in the league) but there are other factors- partly the economic situaiton (obviously Sunderland is not a wealthy area and even £20 for a ticket is a lot if you arent earning much and have 2 kids to take to the game). The main thing affecting attendances however is the "experience"- if you go to a pub you can watch the match, stand up whilst doing so, nip outside for a cigarette any time you fancy, drink during the game, shout whatever you want etc. Go to the match and its all "sit down, don't swear, you aren't allowed out for a smoke and if we don't like the songs you're singing we'll chuck you out". Poor atmospheres are driving traditional fans away from attending games, along with the niggling feeling that the clubs dont really give a fuck and we are paying shit loads to feed the extravagant lifestyle of a bunch of heartless mercenary millionaires who often wont even acknowledge their fans after an away match, nevermind if you see them in town.

Clubs complaining about "illegal" (as they see it) broadcasts of games can piss off- the reason it is possible to broadcast these games is because the clubs allow the TV rights to be sold abroad for fuck loads of money, many times more than they take through the turnstiles from people attending. As far as I'm concerned they can't have their cake and eat it, they are happy to accept the money from the foreign TV deals, so they should just accept that some over here might watch it
