Onlinegooner is under threat (5/2)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Onlinegooner is under threat (5/2)

Post by gooner.ed »

http://www.onlinegooner.com/exclusive/index.php?id=521

from emails about other sites i have been getting this morning, it seems life is rarely dull if you have an arsenal website with a forum/messageboard.

and that is all i am going to say on the matter!

except it's good to be back. hopefully, no kneejerk reactions from our hosting company from here on...

Maybe it's under the Trades Description Act. The onlinegooner is listed as a football chat site - and yet, there is no football chat going on

It's basically you can say anything apart from where another act of parliament says that you cannot, i.e. race hate, breaching the peace, defamation laws.

Right to privacy is a relatively new concept in English Law, since this convention was enacted with the Human Rights Act which became law in 2000.

Basically one's right to privacy and one's right to freedom of expression can clash - there comes in the doctrine of proportionality: is party A's right of privacy of greater interest than party B's right to express whatever information it is they are imparting.

The real question is not about Freedom of Speech - it's about whether we want a shoulder to cry on when Highbury is demolished, DB10 retires, TH14 departs or simply that we've played cr*p at Middlesborough when no-one else wants to listen.

Personally I'd have struggled a lot more than I did with Thierry's departure but after we all discussed it online for about 24 hours it became clear that there might even be positives. Likewise to share the glow when we win and the other lot don't, like Saturday, is pretty good for one's soul and general wellbeing.

So long live the Online Gooner and let's agree not to make any remarks that are likely to put an end to this valuable forum. As paranoid, victimised Arsenal supporters - think red cards, too many foreigners etc -I think we need that 'listening ear' more than most.

(I don't like the term anti-semitism, partly because Jews are only one of the semitic peoples, as you've pointed out.) I did not intend anything literal in terms of inciting violence, and I'm sure no-one here would have read it that way (it's pretty bleedin obvious I'm too old, middle class and liberal to get myself involved in real violence). But I will make sure I'm a bit more careful in future, as we all should be.

just to clarify for the confused that the reason the site was taken down were comments about an individual and nothing to do with this particular debate.

Can I just say that I detest the said particular individual?

Clearly I can't name them. I can't refer to his/her/its gender, breeding habits, sartorial elegance or total lack of it, size or lack of it. Nor can I refer to their mental characteristcs, mental state, geographical location, georgaphical origin, inside leg measurement, girth or lack of it, height in metric or imperial measure, ugliness or beauty or where they sit in the stadium - or if indeed they do sit, or maybe stand, in the stadium.

None of which alters the fact that I detest them.

Meanwhile back at Arsenal - how come the French always manage to injure AFC players?

That the **** ***** from hell closed the site !

Publish and be dammed ,a forum is a forum and there for debating ALL points of view ,even or maybe especially when they disagree with me !

ARSENAL !

(SORRY HERD. AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAY BUT OUR HOSTING COMPANY DON'T SEE IT THAT WAY. A DEFAMATION ACTION AGAINST THEM WOULD COST SERIOUS MONEY, AND THEY ARE NOT GOING TO STAND UP FOR THE PRINCIPLES OF FREE SPEECH IF THEY CONSIDER THERE IS ANY CHANCE OF LOSING MONEY. WE ARE UNDER STRICT INSTRUCTION NOT TO HAVE ANY CONTENT THAT WOULD LEGALLY IDENTIFY THE PERSON THAT WAS THE REASON WE WERE TAKEN OFFLINE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE. WE COULD MAKE THE SITE STRICTLY MEMBERS ONLY IN THE WAY THE HERD'S SITE IS, BUT AS IT STANDS WE WANT TO HAVE AN OPEN DOOR POLICY, EVEN IF IT MEANS UNWELCOME VISITORS. IF I STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHT TO EXPRESS YOURSELF WITHOUT LIMITS HERE, NOT ONLY THE FORUM, BUT THE WHOLE SITE GOES UNDER. SUCH IS THE POWER OF LEGAL THREATS. WE MAY MOVE TO ANOTHER HOSTING COMPANY IN TIME BUT FOR NOW WE HAVE TO PLAY BY THE RULES OF THE EXISTING ONE - GOONER.ED)

But i find it disturbing that certain individuals who supposedly support Arsenal spend a very unhealthy amount of time stirring up trouble for others, many of whom have been going for decades longer !

I just wish they could channel their energies into positive actions ,like say A diet or a new wardrobe prehaps !

From the mountains, to the prairies ,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America
My home sweet home.
