As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
now he as had a little run in the side he looks liek the player of 2006. he looks comfortable on the ball and a good back up to either Gallas or Toure. his only down side he isn't able to come in and perform at the top level straight away.
he was great on saturday and worked well with Gallas.
Acutally yes he does show leadership qualities. Gives it his all, each and every game. Rallies the players, aprreciates the fans. I remember hearing a story from his first season. Cant remember the exact details but apparntly at half time in a game where we were awful, he was in the dressing room shouting at all the players, including Henry and others. Not many players show that kind of strength, especially someone so young and new in a room of world class stars.
So why doesnt he have leadership qualities in your eyes? Apart from the fact you might not think he's a great player

To me Rilo he often looks nervous and is prone to schoolboy errors.
I can agree with you that he can often been seen trying to add vocal support etc to the team but I just do not believe he exudes the confidence and inspriration that ideally you would like in your choice of captain.
I will happily concede that his performances have been decent over the last few weeks.....well in my eyes since the Burnley game where I thought he was poor......but a good month does not make a player!
Again just suprised that a player who is only 22, by no means first choice for his club and whose form has dipped considerably since 2006 as stated earlier is captain of his national side!
I remember a young centre back coming into the team and being ridiculed by anyone other than gooners as a donkey, funny thing he turned out to be one of the greatest captain's the club's ever had...
No not putting sendros in that same league quite yet...buti dont think you can fault the kid on spirit and fight. Yes he made some shockers but i think you can see a lot of them come from a lack of confidence and that confidence will grow with a run in the team.

AMEN
someone finally singing from the same song sheet as me!
Oh fuck it I have been drawn iinto a Big Phil debate again!
Look I agree that on spirit and fight he is right up there with the best of them! However given the number 6 shirt for Arsenal I would give 1000% just the same as I am sure we all would here! Doesn't stop us looking out of our depth and without the skills necessary to be a centre half of true Arsenal class.
I have always said that the comparisons with TA6 are very weak. Adams was an inspirational figure and the best centre half of his type in his era. Yes he made some high profile mistakes but his usual performanace were faultless. Phil has made high profile mistakes but has then backed them up with jittery nervous games........big difference. The need for that kind of centre half has diminished over the years with pace being the main weapon now not height and power. I sometimes think Phil is a defender from a bygone age. Also can you see Man Yoo desperately trying to sign Senderos over the next few years as they did with Adams?

Like Arsenal would try to sign either John O'Shea or Wes Brown?
I DON'T THINK THERE ARE ANY REAL DOUBTS THAT HE HAS LEADERSHIP SKILLS - HE HAS BEEN CAPTAIN OF THE VARIOUS SWISS YOUNGER AGE GROUP TEAMS BEFORE, SO THAT IS AN EXPLAINATION AS TO HIS SELECTION AS SKIPPER. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT HIS PERCEIVED LEADERSHIP QUALITIES WAS ONE OF THE REASONS ARSENE BOUGHT HIM.
THE WORRIES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OVER WHETHER OR NOT HE WOULD MAKE THE DEFENSIVE MISTAKE THAT MIGHT COST US A MATCH. ONCE AGAIN, TO BE FAIR TO THE GUY, HE DOES LOOK A LOT MORE SOLID WHEN HE HAS HAD A RUN OF GAMES UNDER HIS BELT.
THE PROBLEM IS, AS THE THIRD CHOICE CENTRE-HALF AT THE CLUB, PHIL IS NOT ALWAYS GOING TO GET THAT LUXURY AND HE NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO SLOT IN STRAIGHT AWAY WITHOUT CAUSING THE DECERNABLE AND UNDERSTANDABLE FEAR AMONG THE FANS THAT HE IS ABOUT TO COCK SOMETHING UP.
No we wouldn't want to buy O'Shea or Brown as they are not good enough in the same way Man Yoo would not want Senderos as he is not good enough.
So really you have only backed up my statement!
If you are goimg to argue at least make it factual, informed and relevant as well as thinking over what you are going to say before using it as a standpoint.

The comparrison is between Adams and Senderos!

the point Im making is that Senderos is a good replacement when he comes in I would rather Phil to either of them 2 mugs, simple as
Do you not find it suprising that a 22 year old player whose form has been on the decline for 2 years, who is by no means a regualr for his club and whose lapses in concentration causes so much concern is captain of his country?
That is all the post was about!
Would it suprise you if Titus Bramble was made captain of England?
