If memory serves me right, Juventus was after Big Phil not too long ago.
And as i have said a thousand times already in this forum, Senderos was a part of a Swiss world cup squad who were knocked out without conceeding a goal. He has a big role in the Swiss national team. And hes the only one in the Swiss team other than Djourou ofcourse who plays for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And lets us not forget he has been a skipper of an Arsenal side (doesnt matter first team or second string). Arsene wouldnt be charitable enough to give him that position if he didnt think he could be a leader.

does it suprise you that Phil was voted best young player at a under 18 championships? every game he played the captian for that team!
Also he was part of the swiss world cup team that didnt concede a goal in open play!!
we went 10 games with out conceding a goal in Europe and Phil was in the heart of that defence,
Someone made a point on sky sports the other day Arsenal have conceded 3 goals in all the games he has replaced Gallas or Toure in, not sure if thats true,
I have said on numerous occassions toure and Gallas make mistakes but are never ridiculed or subjected to the abuse phil gets!
Gallas for the Craping cup against the Spuds was piss poor
all the penalties we have conceded have come from a Toure challenge.
If we really wanted we could pick holes in every player
Adebayor needs 5 shots to score 1 goal, Cesc and Matty get booked way to often, our wingers aint wingers but above all else we are top of the league so something must be working,
before christmas it was just me defending Phil now it seems a lot more people have seen the light and are backing Phil

Juventus are a club in real shit as we all know and have made another big signing recently.....Olaf Melberg!
Anyhow for all we know that was paper talk!
I'm with Gus on his evaluation of Big Phil and he makes a really good point in that, the comparisons with TA (which is getting really cliché now) are weak because the kind of centre half needed now is a completely different breed to that needed 20 years ago.
But back on topic; I couldn’t really give a toss who the Swiss captain is. But if you’re asking me whether I would want Big Phil as my captain (in any top flight team) the answer would always be no.

I don't think Juventus signing Mellberg is a mistake. I also don't think that Juventus trying to sing Swiss Cheese is impressive, after all, remember they signed Boumsong after his Newcastle stay. That guy and Bramble were like a circus actgus ceasar is a legend wrote:He also gave it to Fabianski!!!!!!!!!Gunnerz4life wrote:If memory serves me right, Juventus was after Big Phil not too long ago.

Can we really jusify a under 18 tournament and form from two seasons ago as evidence of the guys class today!
Yeah he had a good world cup.........so did Toto Schillachi and Roger Milla but what came of them?
You can read back to the Carling Cup Spud posts and will see that I had a right dig at Gallas as your right he was shocking so I am not blinkered!
I am wise enough to see and to say that Phil has been decent over the last few weeks and has deserved praise but I am sure you will find that Hillier even had a few good games on the spin too!
Phil is ok nothing more and nothing less! He is however not the next Tony Adams and for a lot of knowledgable people not Arsenal class!

And we dont know whether Fabianski has leadership qualities or not do we now? And are you saying Olaf Melberg is worse or as good as Senderos? Melberg would have made a decent third choice.gus ceasar is a legend wrote:He also gave it to Fabianski!!!!!!!!!Gunnerz4life wrote:If memory serves me right, Juventus was after Big Phil not too long ago.

And yes Juve did sign Boumsong, but then they were playing in the second division.
And its not just the world cup that Big Phil played well in, he was a part of the defense which got us to the CL final. We dont need a Tony Adams to be the third choice, Phil is good enough for that. Who does Chelski or manure have for their third choice centre back? Ben Haim, Alex, Wes Brown, real world class players

Senderos has not been the same player since Drogba ate him out and spat him out..Yes he has done well recently but against who? A washed up Michael Owen and a Man City side without one striker.
Remember his performance against a team that did have strikers-Seville.He was a pile of horseshit that night

Pascal Cygan was French player of the year before he signed for us, remember?
I think Smoothie, and a few others, are missing the point. Big Phil has come in for a bit of stick on this site because of making horrendous mistake after horrendous mistake. Every Gooner I speak to in person thinks the same; he scares the shit out of us whenever he plays, and if you play a ball over his head, he's fucked! However, Smoothie (and others) seem to think that Big Phil isn't getting the recognition he deserves for his recent performances. This couldn't be further from the truth. I think most people on here have recognised that he's been playing well recently - but just because he's had 4 or 5 good games doesn't mean that, all of a sudden, his mistakes have been forgotten and that he's now fulfilling his destiny and becoming the new Tony Adams.
He isn't a great player, and I'd argue that he isn't a very good one, either. I have nothing against him personally, but I still get really nervous whenever he turns out for us. As I've shown with Ade, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong, but Big Phil has only played a handful of decent games for us this season. Things need to be kept in perspective.

To be fair to the bloke, he has done well when he has got a run in the team for some time. Maybe thats a sign that we should play him more often? He has played quite a few pressure matches in his time for us. The whole Champion's league, 2005 FA cup final, Chelsea away last season. You will find a lot of clean sheets in those games. How come those games dont get mentioned but his performance over a couple of games against Drogba does? I think it has more to do with our mentality than him to be honest.tonysaunders wrote:Pascal Cygan was French player of the year before he signed for us, remember?
