Good balanced article from http://my.hsj.org/Schools/Newspaper/tab ... e_end.aspx
While going through your TV channels, you stumble upon one that is talking about the Earth ending in 2012. You stay on that channel listening to the narrator giving you all these reasons and predictions. But is this true? Are the predictions accurate and reasonable? Will the world really end in 2012?
There are many reasons why experts predicted that the Earth would end by 2012. Reasons such as the Mayan calendar, sun storms, super volcano, Earth’s magnetic poles, and calculations from physicists as well, are supporting the fact that the Earth will end in 2012.
The Mayans once calculated that the lunar moon lasts about 329.53020 days, which was very close to the actual number. This time, they calculated that the Earth will end by December 21, 2012. They might be undoubtedly close to the actual lifespan of the Earth this time again. Furthermore, the physicists have punched in numbers and shown that 2012 will be the year that the Earth ends with certitude of 99 percent.
Statistics have shown that the sun is giving out an unexpectedly high amount of radiation waves. If this situation exacerbates, it might as well destroy the Earth.
The Earth’s magnetic poles swap their positions every 750,000 years. Experts have shown that the poles are moving apart from each other at a rate of 20-30 kilometers per year, which is a very detrimental factor. If the poles moves any further, the magnetic field will be disrupted and eventually the UV from the sun will destroy anything in sight (http://www.merinews.com/article/the-wor ... 9440.shtml).
In contrast, some experts said that nothing bad will happen to us in 2012 because the Earth have been around for four billion years and it will continue to stick around. They also questioned the Mayan calendar’s reason. They said that if nothing bad ever happens to us when our calendar ends on December 31st, why would something happen when the Mayan calendar ends on December 21st, 2012? NASA astronomers have also carried out the Spaceguard Survey which served to find large asteroids near the Earth before they hit. Results have shown that a large one has yet to be found (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html).
“I think this is just a rumor that’s being exaggerated. Nothing is really going to happen,â€

I started another thread in the basement on this, apologies to Mods and 1991, so I guess the Mods will lock one of them.

I myself don't believe in it. When in 2010, I thought something "special" might happen. Not the end of the world or anything like that. But now, I am pretty sure it's just another year. And after all I have survived Y2K, bird flu, mad cow, and swine flu. So 2012, here I come!

MegaGooner is researching the subject so will add to it when he is ready.
I looked into the 2012 "prophecy", where some say the world will end in 2012.
From what I can tell, the actual "prophecy" is not so much a prophecy, but marks a period of time in the Mayan calendar ending on 21 December 2012.
A new period of time in the Mayan calendar consequently starts that day.
There is nothing definite about a sudden cataclysmic event on that day, and nothing definite to say such an event will not happen.
It does mark the start of the earth moving back towards the centre of the galaxy, a process that takes many thousands of years.
Currently the earth is moving away from the centre of the galaxy.
This move back towards the centre of the galaxy will cause a change in energy, the likely result will be increased creativity and a more peaceful world.
(I know that sounds a bit "hippyish" but it makes sense to me).

You will see that the official NASA website states that the existing "baktun" period in the Mayan Calendar ends on 21 December 2012, and a new "baktun" begins.
21 December 2012 marks a day when the earth faces the centre of the galaxy, so is positioned to receive increased energy.
Plenty has been written about the Mayan calendar by Dr Jose Arguelles if you wish to read further.
(Apologies to mods there are now two threads about this).

Thats the thing, its just been misinterpreted!safcftm wrote:the fucking world better not end in 2012, we've only just started to learn how to win more than 2 away games in a season. Thankfully its just a fucking mental bunch of Mayans who believe in it, and since they probably dont know how to program a Sky+ box, i'm not overly concerned
