A teenage view of grumpy old Arsenal fans (13/2)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

A teenage view of grumpy old Arsenal fans (13/2)

usual thread starter… No question that there are a large number of attendees at matches that use the opportunity to vent their frustrations, and it’s not what you’d call support. Mind you, what’s this kid got against Guardian readers? Are they hitting him over the head with rolled up copies or something?

I think that the funny thing about the moaners is that it would not matter how well the team are doing, they just like moaning. Christ, what a life they must lead! If you can’t support the team vocally, these people should at least sit back and enjoy the football, but then again, they probably enjoy moaning more.

So save yourself upwards of £35 a fortnight and go do it on a park bench somewhere!

I think moaning non-stop without getting behind the team is too much but I don't know anyone who doesn't have some sort of moan at the game. Everyone thinks they could make better judgments and see things the manager can't - it's a natural condition.

And the kid doesn't need to worry about getting strangled by a Guardian reader. Now a Daily Mail reader....

Who are these people who sit near you?!!!! Why do they go on about Man Utd? Are they Arsenal fans or corporate types? Not all older fans moan so much, because we have been through some periods of really dull football and appreciate just how good the team is now in comparison.

The thing about being older is though, that one gains perspective.

If like me you have seen all the teams from 1978, then you can rightly say that Walcott and Diaby are not as good as the tohers. But I also say they are young and should improve and I do not judge them harshly.

Plenty of young fans moan too. I used to sit behind a woman of about 21 who moaned all the time about how Bergkamp was "rubbish, a waste of space, a terrible player"!!!!!!!! So obviously there are younger fans who have a weird opinion too.

Oi! I'm a Guardian reader and I don't think I'm that miserable! I'll have you know the Guardian is very pro-Arsenal at the moment

Someone should get Harry a copy of Fever Pitch - the full-on hatred of Arsenal players on the part of Arsenal fans in the 70s and 80s (which many of us witnessed) is well-recorded there.

And just as you wouldn't have gone to the East or West Stands to sing at Highbury (or the last version of the North Bank come to that...) so you wouldn't sit on the halfway line at Ashburton and expect much chanting. It just ain't like that.

We're all entitled to a good whinge about the team, it's part of the pleasure of going to football matches, but Harry's right that some people take it to ridiculous levels.

i have to say i thought so too, although at the same time i did a little tidying up of grammar spelling before i posted it. other thing was that i emailed the author to confirm the name they wanted it credited to (only had an email address) at a time, when, logically, a 13 year old would have been at school. but i'll suspend my disbelief as i am sure there's a good explanation for that!

I also have nothing against the Guardian. In fact I want to be a journalist there when I'm older but there was some old guy in front of me who got the Guardian out and started reading it before Flamini scored against newcastle

You still missed a couple: "everyone around us are true supporters" should be "everyone around us is a true supporter" and "Needs to by more" should be "Needs to buy more". And it could do with some commas.

Tut-tut, gooner.ed.

Good article though, thanks Harry.
