The Y-Word

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

The Y word is used amongst us Jews to refer to each other but only when pronounced "Yeed", it simply is a Yiddish term for Jew but in the sense of being a decent bloke, akin to how a 1970's Mobster might call someone "A standup guy".

The word in it's football usage is impossible to stamp out whilst Spurs use it themselves. Ironically as many here have pointed out, it is non-Jewish Spurs fans who use it just as much as Jewish ones.

It can of course make some Jews uncomfortable at games.

Spurs are no more a Jewish club than Arsenal, both teams have Jewish support going back 90 years and have had Jewish directors and players, though at Arsenal only at youth and ladies team level.

As for the Holocaust chants, sadly they are around the ground.
Have heard them at Kings Cross station too this season, also outside Arsenal station. Four middle aged white English blokes singing them, but a disturbing thing was whilst they were wearing Arsenal colours, they were asking directions to Arsenal station from King's Cross. So whoever they were, they were not Gooners.

BNP?
EDL?
Another team's firm infiltrating?
Old Bill?

(As for the N word in the USA, interesting that two comedians, heavy users of that word, famously Richard Pryor and latterly Paul Mooney, actually made deliberate decisions to drop it after feeling that no matter how much African-Americans tried to turn the meaning round into a term of affection, it remained an ugly word.)

The fact is that while there are "official" rules that arent and really cant be enforced nothing will ever change.

I've been talking about this with a good few people today, the only way you could eliminate the word on a mass level like they did with the n word is to actually have a zero tollerance of it. With a word that has become so indocrinated with the identity of the club how can they get rid of it? how can they really stop spuds from singing their chants? Are they going to kick 30,000 people out of the ground?

The simple answer is no. It will continue. Why?

In my opinion for a good few years now the fa have worked at length to make their image, and that of english football squeaky clean (even before the world cup bid). Incidents happen up and down the country every week (coins/bottles thrown on pitch, mass fighting amounst fans outside of grounds, nazi chanting, ect) that go unreported by the main stream media. Certain chants that are ignored by the commentators, and are basically just accepted as the norm hence ok. I remember clearly at sheff utd a few years back them singing the 5 german bomers song to lehmann and even now it makes my blood boil. When i got home and watched back on tv you could here it loud and clear any mention by commentator, nowt, whys that then?

Now dont get me wrong I really dont hold anything against 99% of people us the y word as i know you 99% are using it in a football context alone. But my point is that soley because of football reasons the term has become more acceptable, which is sad. And that doesnt represent them or the sport well.

....well fuck them. I say ban all the fuckers who sing it a shite hart lane. :barscarf:

And there was me thinking Sami represented all Jewish people...everywhere!

Well said Quartz and regarding spurs usage in a football context, I wholeheartedly agree. And as this is a football campaign, and if it is serious, then the proof of the pudding will be in how it deals with spurs.
