season ticket pricing by IG

"Ticket prices at Arsenal Football Club will go up by approximately four per cent next season, in line with inflation.......In addition, the 2.5 per cent rise in VAT brought in by the Government earlier this year will affect ticket prices".

This is misleading bullshit. The impact of the VAT increase is only 2.1% (120/117.5) so the true price increase is 4.3%.....(by my calculations anyway!).

Plus, most of Arsenal's costs are in loan repayments and player wages. The first is surely linked to Bank of England rates which I don't think have changed much. And surely Arsenal have control over wage increases.... Few of the rest of us are getting a pay increase so why should anyone at Arsenal. Lets face it, win bonuses must be under budget!!!!!!!

Pisstake statement full of marketing bollocks where they try to justify their decision without actually talking any sense.

I laughed particularly hard at the line about giving more tickets to Reds. I guess that wouldn't be because you're expecting record levels of non ST renewals then?! *word censored*.

And free ATVO membership? Great. The only thing worth watching on there was the reserve games & they've decided to *word censored* those off.

Fucking wankers. Absolute *word censored*. I bet they had a quick chat yesterday and thought that with old Bin Laden gone and us having beaten Manure, it would be a good day to bury a bit of bad news. I'm renewing with a very heavy heart and am giving it one more year tops. I've got a mortgage, new baby and I have a cricket club membership that costs me each year too so they'll get my money for what could be the last time. If I don't renew, I could actually see myself not bothering to go again and I think lots of other people feel so let down and so angry with the way the club is at the moment.
All I can say is that they better fucking buy some proven class players in the summer and win a fucking trophy next Spring because if thery think we're pissed off now, just you wait.
In my own way of protest, I won't be buying a single thing from that club next season. No teas, no beers, no shirts, no gifts for friends- they can have my season ticket and fuck all else. :x

Did they cut the prices when VAT went to 15%, or at that point did they pretend that there would have been a bigger rise if it wasnt for the VAT cut? Im guessing ticket prices only go one way

An absolutely dreadful decision at a time when people are struggling to pay for things that actually matter. Arsenals profits seem decent enough, do they really need to fleece that little bit more out of their loyal supporters when they are already absolutely milking it with domestic and, particularly, foreign TV deals?

Historically Arsenal are a club that most football fans respect, but currently they are almost leading the way in the shiny, PL, corporate shit side of the game which is spoiling the sport for so many people. Already about the highest prices in the league despite hardly investing in playing staff and thus failing to win major trophies, but no, stick the prices up again because whilst some actual Gooners will now, having done their best to keep paying through the nose every season, have to finally give up their season tickets, who cares, theres a tourist/ rich middle class prick just waiting to take his seat

This is why people nowadays are so quick to criticise managers- you dont just turn up and pay a small amount on the gate to get into the North Bank, you pay an utter fucking fortune and when you are paying that much, you start to expect some sort of a return- the manager is making a fucking fortune, the players are making a fortune, the agents are making a fortune, the directors are making a fortune, all paid for by the fans

Football supporters really need to stand up and start to do something about this- give up season tickets, stop buying merchandise, tell the corporate world to fuck off out of our sport. Clubs act as if their fans owe them something, its about time they got a strong message that we wont allow them to keep taking the absolute piss out of us.

Tell some poor Gooner who is trying to keep up mortgage payments on his house whilst paying to bring up two young kids to spend an extra £60 or whatever a season, then (in 09/10, its probably risen by now), pay £3,660,199 to agents. Fuck off.

If as they say prices haven't increased for 3 seasons wouldn't that work out to a 1.4 ish rise per season though?

Which year on year is fairly low? Is it?

Finances aren't really my strong point but comparably:

public transport, rail fares, petrol, shopping etc would have all gone up by an equal if not higher amount over the last 3 years?

I know we pay the highest prices already, but is there something in the comparative rise?

I might be out of my comfort zone here.

Whatever they're doing they are ripping the fucking piss. Even if the price rises are slowing down, they have spent the last 30 years or so rocketing out of control

For instance a quick search for "Arsenal ticket 1980" brings up a ticket for your game with Everton in 1980/81. £3 to get in. A quick check on http://www.moneysorter.co.uk/calculator_inflation.html shows that allowing for inflation, that would be worth £8.99 today. Somehow I dont think you'd get far with 9 quid at the emirates. Ticket prices, regardless of their rise in the very recent years, have been getting astronomical for a long time

Yeah prices have been rocketing but again is there something to be said for the astronomical boom in football these last 20 years?

World wide appeal, massive transfer fee's, higher investment in training facilities/stadia. It's all gotta come from somewhere no?

I mean I hate modern day football, but that's mainly because of the players. I'm just look at the increase in prices in isolation. A one off 4% rise when they haven't risen for 3 years. Although, I thought I read recently that season tickets hadn't risen since we moved stadium.

Based on the price of almost all the shit you spend your money on, it's about the same isn't it?

True, but some businesses - including football clubs - haven't raised their prices at all in that period, not even next season. I think there are even some who have reduced their prices.... Whatever, it's very rich of IG to argue about the need to raise prices just a couple of weeks after so many Directors cashed in on massive share price gains due in no small part to.....increased revenue!

True but, as I alluded to above, you have to look at the industry and the cost of delivering the product. Petrol and ultility costs have risen dramatically over the last few years owing to increased wholesale costs and tax rises. Electrical goods though, as an example, have come down..... Arsenal's costs, I imagine, would be largely payroll related and presuming that they haven't been dolling out massive pay rises then no reason for them to use the "inflation" argument.

In any event, I think that it comes down to supply and demand regardless of increased within the business. Arsenal obviously feel that they can get away with the increase without significantly impacting on attendance or revenue from sales from merchandise.

If you split the cost over the past few years then yes it doesn't seem so bad. However, as many have said, when you are already charging the highest average ticket prices in world football, have won nothing for a considerable amount of time, and more importantly.....have failed to invest significantly in a failing squad for 6 years, let alone consider the economic situation, this is an awful decision.
How long until the cheapest ticket at the Shamerites is £50?

This is going to make a lot of long term Gooners think seriously about the future I reckon.

So inflation is about 4%, and the price of living is increasing a bit. Fine. How many peoples wages are going up in line with inflation, how many people are on pay freezes which mean these increases in living costs are hard enough without football clubs turning the screw, how many people are facing redundancy/ 4 day weeks etc? The working mans sport is no more, these clubs are making fucking millions and millions of pounds through TV deals- with no loyal fans turning up, there would be no multi million pound TV deals, so why the need to screw every last penny out of these fans? This 6.5% is an absolute drop in the ocean to clubs who are already charging an extortionate amount for 19 games worth of "entertainment"

Aaah but you get the cup games from Arsenal.

Unusually for me I'm happy to be corrected on this. Just thinking out loud really.

I've had a pay freeze for the last 2 years. Almost everything has gone up in price though and since I'm so marginalised by football from what I see on the field these days, the greed from the boardroom passes me by really.

I love Arsenal and it is a special thing when I do get to take my boy to the games but these days I get as much pleasure from getting back to basics and having a kick about in the park teaching him the game. 8)

Although I can't stand IG, he is no fool. In Economics, it's called Price Elasticity of demand. If your product is price inelastic, a rise in price will actually increase total revenue i.e the extra cost per unit sold will offset any reduction in the number of units sold, as against a product which is price elastic, which has the opposite effect. Unfortunately the product, in this case each seat sold, is relatively price inelastic, and he knows it.
