Great stuff, I remember the game well. Both sides kicked lumps out of each other and I think Smith scored the equaliser in the 97th minute as there was so much injury time. Cockerill has never in my knowledge complained about the incident which tells me there's a lot more to it as Davis was pretty mild mannered compared to some of the nutters we had back then.

I think that's the obvious rumour that would do the rounds - but not necessarily the right one.

One rumour that Lee Chapman once said on telly was that Cockerill made a nasty remark about doing something x-rated to his mother.

I think the lesson is that even such a mild mannered fellow as Davis can blow his top once in a while.

I think his punishment was a bit ridiculous though - nine matches is nearly a quarter of the season - and I'm sure we've seen worse before and since. Basile Boli headbutting Stuart Pearce, Savage stamping on Cesc's head earlier this year, etc.

After a career of good behaviour he lost his best chance to get in the England squad also for this one incident - colour of his skin maybe?
