Arsene was right not to buy in January (15/2)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Arsene was right not to buy in January (15/2)

usual thread starter… hands up – I was one of the guilty who certainly never saw what Arsene did in Flamini. And if you’d told me Adebayor would score this many goals with only two thirds of the season gone back in July, I’d never have believed you. Which is probably why Arsene is getting paid £4 million a year (or whatever it is) and I buy my season ticket on a credit card…

So will Alex Song come good and has Big Phil persuaded you he is back to the form of spring 2006?

Im still not sure about Song - he has it all to prove.
Senderos should be able to bullet a header in from 8 yards as he is a well paid footballer but I still do not believe that he is very good at the job he is employed to do - DEFEND.
If the worlds best defender never scored a goal but did his job brilliantly we would all wecome him wouldn't we?

If we win the title or the CL then he was right. But if we end up not winning a trophy he will be wrong. My opinion has always been you buy players from a position of strength.I may be wrong though.

we should have added in jan,, the way wenger was talking today about the man u game and the fact that we might be playing with an inexperienced team due to lack of strenght in debt doesnt fill me with confidence for the rest of the season

I agree with donaldo. If we win the title then Wenger was right, if we don't then Wenger was wrong. It is too really to judge whether our inactivity in the transfer window will cost us or not.

IF ONLY LIFE WAS AS SIMPLESTIC AS THAT, EH? ALL OF LIFES' PROBLEMS WOULD BE MUCH EASIER TO SOLVE.

HOWEVER, I ALWAYS REFER BACK TO NEWCASTLE UNITED IN THE 1995/6 TO SHOW THAT IT AIN'T QUITE SO. IF YOU REMEMBER, NEWCASTLE WERE 12 POINTS CLEAR OF MAN UTD IN JANUARY AND BOLSTERED WHAT WAS CONSIDERED A WEAK SQUAD WITH A COUPLE OF SIGNINGS - INCLUDING THE WORLD CLASS TINO ASPRILLIA.

NOW AS WE ALL KNOW, DESPITE KEEGAN'S STRENGTHENING OF THE SQUAD, MAN UNITED MANAGED TO OVERHAUL THEM AND PIPPED NEWCASTLE TO THE TITLE. NOW, WAS THAT BECAUSE KEEGAN MADE UNNECCESSARY ADDITIONS? WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OUT-CRY WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD HE NOT BOUGHT PLAYERS IN JANUARY AND NEWCASTLE GOT BEATEN TO THE TITLE? EXACTLY!! THOSE SAME CRITICS WOULD PROBABLY TURN 180 DEGREES ONTO THE OTHER SIDE AND BE ASKING WHY KEEGAN DIDN'T BUY WHILST THEY WERE TOP AND IN A STRONG POSITION!

YOU SEE, THINGS AREN'T THAT BLACK AND WHITE AND CAN BE MANIPULATED TO SUIT ALMOST ANY ARGUEMENT IF YOU WANT THEM TO. AS I SAID AT THE BEGINNING, IF ONLY LIFE WERE AS SIMPLE AS WE WIN THE TITLE = WENGER RIGHT; WE LOSE THE TITLE = WENGER WRONG!! ALAS FOOTBALL AND LIFE ARE MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT.

The thing everyone seems to have forgotten was the squad was weakend during the transfer window as we sold Diarra and never replaced him.Leaving us stuck with a player who is plainly finished as top class-Gilberto.

The general arguement that arsenal is a solid unit with a great team ethos which could be dissrupted by new signings doesn't cut it for me. Well this may be true if we bought 4 or 5 players, but buying one-a versatile defender-could easily have been integrated into a part of the arsenal 'family'.

Personally I'd have signed Woodgate when Wenger had the chance. Good defender when he's not on the operating table.

I don't think Diarra played enough to call it a significant weakening. To be honest we were well shot of a bad egg.

The Newcastle comparison is a good one. It has been said all season that the departure of Henry gave the rest of the squad more freedom to express themselves.

A big name signing could posibly have reversed that feeling in the squad.

Wenger bought Sagna and Eduardo. Liverpool spent around 42M and look at them! We have lost 4 matches all season, are top of the PL and have a good chance of progressing further in the CL, so I can't find it in my heart to get on Le Boss's back, despite my feelings on Saturday evening.

What he doesn't have now is any excuses to rest players from now until the end of the season. We play the strongest fit 11 and that is that.

Come on you reds!!!!

That would be down to Benitez and his rotation policy. Not the players he has brought in.
