Tim Westwood
Tim Westwood
Listened to Radio 1 this morning for the first time in a while and had my first (and hopefully last) experience of Tim Westwood.....
What a strange sounding guy.....Very plummy/public school voice, but interspersed with regular "Man" like he was from Jamaica.....man. Also claimed the record for the most "You know"s in a row that I've ever heard.....
He sounded so obviously fake that I looked him up on wiki where the constant accusation has been.....that he is fake! Comes from "South Central" Norfolk..... He was the inspiration behind Ali G apparently..... I also read though that he is one of the few DJ's who can demand £10k a night, so I guess he must have something.....
I'd never heard of him before, and hope never to hear from him again.......

Have listened to Westwood since his LWR show in early 1985, been to many of his jams, met him a few times too and been in the studio during his show.
He has talked about his family in interview and his late father was the Bishop of Peterborough.
He was brought up in Norfolk, moved to West London in his early twenties.
He has never claimed to be anything other than he was, but rightly in my opinion he never talked about his family much as he seldom gave interviews for many years, and when he did so he just talked about music.
His public persona is very much a brand, a funny voice which is not trying to be something Jamaican, it is simply a voice unique to him.
As a DJ he is undoubtedly the single greatest influence on Hip Hop in this country, and his radio shows in the late 80's were probably the best Hip Hop shows in the world. His independence of the in-fighting between New York factions meant he had exclusive access to many tunes before they were released, in fact some of them never saw releases because of music industry politics.
He also did much to educate his listeners by playing Funk and Soul and Go Go tunes alongside Hip Hop, and so putting the newer music of Hip Hop in historical context.
His cutting edge diminished a bit after he went to Radio One and he adopted a more commercial playlist, but this enabled him to expand his business activities.
To his credit though, after his shooting in the late 90's, he seems to laugh at himself and tried his hand at the "Pimp My Ride" show.
My main criticism of him is that he could have done more to play UK Hip Hop on his radio show, but he did launch his own record label to release UK Hip Hop in the late 80's and featured some UK groups on his "N Sign Radio" TV show too.

that makes no sense at all. so i take it you hate all covers? and every song has to have a different chord progression etc? i bet 90% of the songs you like are the same 4-5 chords in a different order. DJ's dont nick songs, they play peoples songs and create a mix like a journey, they dont stand on stage pretending that they made the music. The whole set is a musical composition made up of songs, mixed, crafted in a way to be a soundtrack or even an experience.DB10GOONER wrote:I'm sorry fuckers but as a punter that plys guitar i have no fucking time for DJ's. Write a song you robbing bastards, learm a fucking instrument you theiving cuntahs.![]()
I get that people dont like dance music, i love all music and i play guitar and dj (not at the same time

so much bullshit when it comes to music!! i think i mustve been a hippy in another life
