U-21 Tournament

Post by GunnerDude »

As I posted elsewhere.

I suppose the media will blame Arsene and Arsenal for the Un21's lack of creativity. Haven't seen a decent pass for any of them. I'm beginning to wish Jack went, would have made it easier to watch. This is just dross.

Also, can't believe Liverpool paid £20mill for that. Unlucky

Tell you what though, £35m and Thiago wouldn't be a bad deal for Cesc. Thiago looks very good.

Watched the majority of this match and the difference in class was huge :o Martin tyler said at the start of the game that engerland had 2 ball playing centre halves.........dont know where they were cos all I seen was 2 guys launch long balls up to two strikers who couldnt trap a bag of cement tonight

Have to say that on that performance jordan henderson is not worth anything near 10m much less 20m - tbh he just looked like an english denilson to me   I know the scum right back set up the equalizer but did anybody see his run in the 1st half where tiago took him out ? There he is galloping at pace from the right back position with the ball at his feet and his eys locked on the ball the whole way to the half way line where he is fouled and for me it summed up the difference in quality striaght away cos not once did he get his head up to see anything around him

From the point of view that the spain goal should not have stood it pleased me that the equaliser was also a dubious goal cos losing to a cheated goal doesnt sit well with me. That said spain should have won and were a class apart and will win if they meet again and while spain could introduce players like bojan and capel as subs engerland could only bring on lansbury and sinclair

I will also agree that tiago did look a clas class player but it was the spanish captain that stood out for me - playing the DM position he was outstanding in his reading of the game, his strength on the ball and his use of the ball and on that performance I would suggest that he would be an upgrade on song

Really? He looked no better than Jack or Ramsey, I doubt he would handle the pace of the league, I really hope he's not part of any deal, if a player is to come the other way it has to be someone that will get into the team like Mascherano or Affelay, why take their cast offs?

Agree about their captain, big lad aswell.

It was stunning at how both countries manner reflected their senior sides, we must be so far behind in terms of coaching.

Spain were comfortable, England scared of the ball.

Henderson is going to be a top player, will do very well for Liverpool and will be in the England squad for the 2014 qualifiers imo. Didn't have much impact on the game today, but then at least he turned up to play despite having a full season behind him when certain others decide they cant be arsed, at least Henderson is leaving the decision about whether he is fit enough to play to the manager. He wont be at his best, especially when playing against a top side like Spain who are adept at keeping possession and making the opposition chase, but he'll be fine in the tournament and will then get rested before the season starts

England did look poor though, its always been the case that we struggle against teams that are technically proficient, the whole system is wrong in England and even if changes are made now, it will be a good 20 years before we see the benefits. At schools etc, the first players picked are generally the lads who are bigger than the rest, smaller lads arent given much of a chance and the games are just hoof-fests, its like watching Stoke. There should be a lot more games indoors for youngsters with small goals, the ball not being allowed to be above head height, and a maximum number of touches before passing the ball on. Then, as has been mentioned by (I think it was) Southgate recently, there needs to be longer before they get into playing on 11 a side pitches.

Currently you either get picked at school levels if you are bigger than the other lads and can thus bully them on the pitch (Kevin Davies style) and the only other lads who can get a look in is the ultra fast Lennon, Walcott, Wright-Phillips brigade who are all pretty much sprinters and nothing else, no technical ability between them- on the odd occasion they actually manage to "beat" their man (ie boot the ball and run like fuck), they tend to remember that they dont know how to cross a ball. Until this is addressed, we will keep getting sides going to tournaments and struggling to keep possession.

Back in the day, we could play "the English way" and bully teams (pretty much elbow the fuckers, kick their skilful players off the park etc), but now the game is so near to non contact that you cant hope to beat a team that plays like Spain. They keep the ball for such periods that they tire you out, when you do get it there is a lot of pressure to make it count as you know you wont get it back (and not being technically great, our players tend to get it, panic, and give it back to them) and when they have it we cant get close to them without them winning a free kick. Major changes needed or we will never win a senior tournament again

That would have always been my way of thinking too and it is a system we have used in our local club training but a couple of seasons ago I heard that idea mocked by some pundit who said that it prevents players being comfortable in possession if they are trained to get rid of the thing almost as soon as they get it and being honest that kinda makes sense to me too. It is very hard to know which method is the best but I also agree that british and Irish training methods are light years behind their more technical opponents but the thing is that nobody has the patience and foresight to put a structure in place that will remedy that cos this business is all results based now and the pressure to win means that coaches play the players that will give them the best chance of that regardless of technical ability.

The biggest factor of course in the technical gulf between these nations is that in spain there are over 160 uefa grade A qualified coaches whilst in england there are just over 20.......speaks volumes doesnt it :(

Henderson isnt 1st choice for the senior side. Assuming you are referring to JW that is.

And lets not kid ourselves, playing a full season with sunderland does not compare to playing a full season with Arsenal where the lad was getting kicked about in most of the games in all of the 4 competitions he played in. Start taking Jack to play extra unnecessary football now and by the age of 23 he'll just be another michael owen.

The commentators on sky can blame JW for england being outclassed all they like but surely they need to ask themselves why theres nobody but more plodders coming through.

Not interested.I haven't followed England since myself and two mates were told by a Community officer that it was "rascist" and could be seen as "offensive" to wear England shirts. This was in Rugby,(vertually the centre of England),during the Portugeuse Euros.

these kids have been coached from 12 to run and hoof, and the general public thought that turning to kids would be the answer. Well they're still being coached the same way to this day. Football moves on, England clings on.

I wouldnt let my support be affected by some jumped up wanker like that tbh. If he'd come up and told me to take me England shirt off I'd have simply told him it was either going to be worn on my body or kicked so far up his fucking arse that he'd be able to use it to floss his teeth. Wankers like him need to be told to fuck right off, especially since even the most PC groups in the country wouldnt deem it either racist or offensive to wear an England shirt, if you want a non violent solution either just completely ignore the fucker, or accuse him of discriminating against England fans and ask to get contact details of his manager

Fair point, I just dont agree in general with players deciding when they feel they can and cant compete and when they think it would benefit them, that decision should be solely down to the England management team so, even though he is a bit in need of a rest, I'm glad that Henderson went to the tournament and hope people dont slag him off too much if he doesnt grab all the matches by the throat. Also, of course, he is a right sided midfielder and for some reason he's being asked to play out of position, which wont help him

I dont agree with those who say that it doesnt make you comfortable in possession tbh, yes, you dont keep the ball long, but you could allow (say) 3 touches, that is enough to kill the ball, knock it to the side, and pick a pass. Players under a certain age shouldnt be needing to do more than that and it would develop the absolutely key attribute of control and first touch. Look at some key England players and you see their first touch is nowhere near the likes of Xavi or Iniestas, in small games like that you need to develop your first touch because if its poor, you need to use your second touch to control the ball properly and are then liable to lose possession as you need to pass/ shoot with your third touch

This gives players the technical base from which to build so that when they do move onto 5 a side and eventually 11 a side, they arent scared of the ball and will be happy to show for it, take it in their stride and keep moves flowing. For me that is the very definition of being comfortable in possession- being happy to receive the ball, able to do so effectively, and comfortable with looking to pick out a pass, you dont need (imo) to have possession for long periods in order to count as comfortable in possession, and the players still have plenty of years ahead of them to play with more touches. Doing this would have helped all of the England players imo.

You make a fair point about coaches just wanting to win at any level though, there does need to be a mix imo of non competitive games where coaches are free to actually develop the lads, and competitive games to develop the lads competitive edge and will to win
