The "Should Arsenal Sign" Game
I will name a player and a price/value/wage. You post "YES" or "NO". You may give your reasons if you wish.
#1: Samir Nasri @ 100,000 pounds per week (to equal Fabregas' contract)
#2: Maarten Stekelenburg @ 13m pound.
#3: Kaka @ 25m pound transfer.
I say:
#1: No, too much money for inconsistent mercenary
#2: Yes, WS53 is still too inexperienced
#3: Yes, I think Kaka will be reborn with the right team and regain his deft form, and he could play in the DB10 position (trequartista).

YES, on top form he is very good.
#2: Maarten Stekelenburg @ 13m pound.
Szczesny looks good and bigger money needs to be spent on outfield players.
#3: Kaka @ 25m pound transfer.
NO, good player but we have a few players who can replace Cesc, focus should be on defence, a wide midfielder and another main striker.

I really don't see the point of these threads as nobody has anyway of knowing how much these players transfer fees/wages etc would cost, how much the arsenal budget is, if the said players would want to join the club anyway, and if there current club would be willing to sell in the first place.
Also I thought the transfer bollocks thread was for all this crap anyway?

we're just bored to feck and with the way all our new signings are(n't) going - it's just another way to while away the hours I guess!?hugh jardon wrote:I really don't see the point of these threads as nobody has anyway of knowing how much these players transfer fees/wages etc would cost, how much the arsenal budget is, if the said players would want to join the club anyway, and if there current club would be willing to sell in the first place.

Sell nasri - we have been stung too many occasions in the past where players think they are better than they and dont show up on the pitch when needed
13m too much for ajax keeper
Kaka I would think would be available for a lot less than 25m - kaka is a player that I would favour buying simply cos I think he style of play is suitable to ours plus if cesc and nasri leave we need a signing to dispel this selling club image. I accept the guy hasnt done well since joining real madrid but form is fleeting and class is permanent and the guy is def class

Yeah Kaka I believe would be an immense signing, guy is class, box to box player, just been unlucky at real with his knee injury and then had an op so hardly figured last season.augie wrote:Sell nasri - we have been stung too many occasions in the past where players think they are better than they and dont show up on the pitch when needed![]()

Re: The "Should Arsenal Sign" Game
For me, Nasri at £100k a week is definitely worth it. Yes, the man is a mercenary but as is becoming clear, pretty much every modern day footballer is. Most footballers dont "support" a club as such since they are playing football most match days during their youth and so, imo, they dont get the whole loyalty thing. You add this to the fact that agents play such a large role nowadays and are always trying to get players to move so they can get a cut (along with the players being able to afford to just up and move house any time they fancy) and you can see why you dont get many (or any) one club players. Possibly the very best clubs might keep a player (messi possibly?) but if you arent always winning and you arent always upping wages, players wont stay. It is one of many things that could make you fall out of love with the game.Barriecuda wrote:I will name a player and a price/value/wage. You post "YES" or "NO". So, if Wenger isnt wanting to sell Nasri, you are faced with a dilemma. He's a mercenary, but anyone else you get in will be a mercenary as well. For me, if he leaves at the end of next season (having been distracted by transfer talk for much of the season and so bound to be not giving 100%) and goes on a free, you will be forced to replace him. Obviously Wenger is always likely to go for a cheap option but if you really had to buy a "like for like" top class replacement for Nasri, we all know you'd be looking at £25m plus. £100k a week= 5.2m a year, so for the same price as replacing Nasri, you could keep him for 5 seasons at 100k a week. Add to this, of course, the fact that your hypothetical £25m signing will also be looking for at least 70k a week wages on top of his fee and keeping Nasri becomes the financially sensible option. the only sensible alternative would be to sell him now whilst you can still get a fee, but clubs know he's out of contract soon and so his value will be relatively low, and some clubs might just tell his agent to wait and promise a massive deal next season instead when he's on a free.
So I'd pay the money to keep Nasri
I have to be honest, I havent seen enough of Stekelenburg to form an opinion one way or the other, I've seen him play well in a couple of games but obviously thats nowhere near enough to judge him
As for Kaka, I'd steer clear. Can be a class player on his day, but whether his body can physically deliver his day any more is one worry, and whether he has the motivation now to do it is another. £25m for him would be a major risk. Add to this the fact that, great though he can be, he isnt what you need. You have players who can provide at least some of what a fully fit Kaka can give you and all of what a half fit/ half arsed Kaka can give you, what you need are a few more solid, committed (whilst still being talented) players, and Kaka would take up so much of your funds that it would lessen the chances of signing the players you really need. For me, Kaka would be window dressing, he wouldnt win you the league, you need someone like a (probably younger) Gattuso, and a Vidic style centre back. Get that sorted this summer, win the league, then look to add the Kaka type signings if needed although, tbh, signings made just because of the name of the player tend not to work out, you need the player to fit into the squad and to buy into the idea of playing for the club, and I'm not sure Kaka would do that at all
