Banners for the San Siro

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Banners for the San Siro

Post by Block 18 row 2 »

Having been impressed by the rossoneri tifosi (Milan fans in plain English) last night with all their banners and stuff I was thinking we should take a few banners over there. I'm sure people are already but it would be nice to create a similar little scene in our corner of the San Siro next month.

Thoughts?

p.s. I know my forum name is shit but I can't change it now!

Watching the CL games this week there was only one set of home fans who didnt have massive flags and banners.
Yes you"ve guessed it Ashburton Grove
Thank you Mr Edelman, flags are allowed in every other european stadium except ours.

Its only the national flags that are banned as far as I know. So we can still bring Arsenal flags and banners :)

The reason that national flags have been banned is because it causes conflict, and some fans have been upset at the waving of certain countries' colours.

As a club statement in that link above says "Arsenal as a club prides itself on being inclusive with respect to all nationalities, cultural and ethnic groups"

It started with the waving of a turkish cypriot flag, and some fans who have a greek cypriot heritage, including myself, were not happy. cyprus and turkey have been in a political crisis since 1974 when turkey invaded the northen part of cyprus. to be flying a flag of that sort when a country is not politically stable in my mind is wrong, and pisses off the greek cypriots who feel that they should not be in OUR country.

Please don't let this thread descend into the minefield that is the Cyprus debate. Lovely place, lovely people and 'Leon' is a decent enough beer. That is all we need to know for now

I'm taking our "Olney Gooners on the Road" Banner so please look out for that. Its only about 6' x 4' so may not be easy to spot - and its against a background of the St George's cross, so would be a no no at a home game....

Whatever the feeling, banning flags was a stupid idea and another concession to political correctness and squabbling that had no place at the club.

Flags

Post by Block 18 row 2 »

I really like those flags they have over in Itlay and other countries with iconic players' faces on. Would be great to have a Flamini one made up in that graffiti stencil style. White on red. Perfect!

SO YOU'RE TO BLAME THEN!!

SERIOUSLY THOUGH, I'M SORRY IF THIS ANNOYS YOU BUT HOW THE HELL CAN SOMEONE HAVING A DIFFERENT NATION FLAG AT THE GROUND - PROVIDING THAT THERE ISN'T A DISTASTEFUL SLOGAN WRITTEN ON IT - BE UPSETTING TO ANYONE? :?

IF YOU WANT TO DEBATE POLITICS WITH YOUR ENEMIES, DO IT ELSEWHERE!! FOR THE LOVE OF JUDAS H. PRIEST, YOU'RE AT THE GROUND TO WATCH THE FOOTBALL AND YOU ARE ALL SUPPOSED TO BE ARSENAL FANS. SURELY THAT'S WHAT REALLY MATTERS? NOT SOME PAROCHIAL BATTLE TAKING PLACE MILES AWAY THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

NOW, BECAUSE OF THOSE COMPLAINTS THE MINORITY HAVE GOT THEIR WAY - AS PER USUAL - AND NO-ONE CAN BRING IN FLAGS!! HOW FAIR IS THAT?

Have to agree with IHH totally, football just aint what it used to be.

I wish someone would do a 'back in time' type experiment, bring back the terraces, the crappy food and toilets, the flags, the banners, the swearing, singing, STANDING is actually allowed and encouraged - and see how much trouble occurs - would be fun!

No im not the one to blame, but how can you justify a flag that symbolises the fact that people were taken from their homes and tortured and killed. cyprus is a politically unstable country, and the fact that the turks have still not given the land back, that rightfully belongs to us, is not correct. to publically flaunt this in a place where thousands of people can see it is not on. some of my family are still missing from 1974, and the likelyhood is that they have been killed. i feel very passionate about the situation and think what you like but i believe arsenal have made the right decision.

I disagree with you, IHH. Demzy's relatives or friends might have been killed during the Turkish invasion on Cyprus so it might hurt him to to see that flag. We are Arsenal so we should bring Arsenal flags. Not a club for patriots who want to bring some flags and wave them around.

I have a different point of view on St George's flags though. We are a club in England therefore it should be normal to bring the St George's flags. And they don't stand out much, they look good as they are red and white like our colours.
