my knowledge of computers is so so, macbook pros are expensive but clearly they are the best at running music production software etc. As proved by nearly every producer/dj using them in a live and and studio set up. (and yes DB10, even 'real' bands using 'real' instruments even use computers to record and dare i say adjust the music they produce )
my question is, does anyone know of any laptops that are just as capable and robust? im well aware that alot of people buy macbooks for the stigma and they are indeed very expensive. Ive looked at an equivilant sony and dell but they get mixed reviews and im not a massive windows fan!
the crunch is the price difference is 600 or so quid!
Get yourself down to a music store and explain what you want to do musically, and they can advise on software. Cubase and Pro Tools, Reason, Fruity Loops and Recycle are all well used too, but the key is what you need to do.
Mixing?
Sampling?
Recording vocals?
My hunch is Ableton Live could be the best option, but definitely try it first in a music store,try sequencing on it, time stretching, recording samples, mixing two tracks, and see how easy it feels.
yeah ableton mate, ive had it a while but it just seems to need so much power to use it without glitching. Im only really messing about too, my laptops farely decent but obviously not man enough for it.
having said that, whatever laptop i buy will purely be for music (ableton live and maybe traktor or a similar dvs) my current laptop has everyday stuff slowing it down. (including the gashness which is vista etc)
my dream set up, macbook pro, akai apc40 and a decent midi keyboard. just need to win the euromillions first
mind you all that costs about the same as the top end season ticket at arsenal for a year, i know what id rather have!!!
i record in windows running cubase, mate. bought the hardware parts and assembled the pc myself as i also enjoy gaming and overclocking (i'm kind of a nerd sometimes) and have to say it works pretty fine. spent 1/3 of a mac in a computer with better specifications and the recording quality is pretty good, at least a lot better than my qualities as a musician
notebooks are another subject, but i do think you can do a job as good as the mac's with a normal notebook and a good external soundcard.

to be honest, the most reliable version of windows to work with audio in my opinion is windows XP.
I've always run Cubase on a windows XP machine with service pack 2. I've had the machine about 7 years and its still ticking along nicely.
Unless you do what bg did and build your own pc i would go for the xp215 laptop thats just come out, portable and powerful and would suit music production quite well.

Do you mean the dell xps 15? That's one I've been looking at, the performance out specs The MacBook and is nearly half the price!!
