Best & Worst individual performance seen

Post by This Is The Daybreak »

In the Lee Chapman thread someone posted how in a game against Stoke City in 1982 Chapman played one of the worst they'd ever seen. Got me thinking what was the best performance you had seen by an Arsenal player and also the worst

Ones that stand out for me are

Best
-Liam Brady in the FA Cup Final, 1979
-David Seaman against Liverpool at Anfield in 1991
-Thierry Henrys hatrick in the San Siro in 2003
-Bergkamps sensational hatrick against Leicester City in 1997
-Arshavin hitting four against Liverpool at Anfield in 2009

Worst
-Igor Stepanovs when we lost 6-1 to the Mancs at Old Trafford
-Arshavin against Leeds at home in the cup last season, the game where he kept trying to substitute himself
-Eboue, when he got booed off against Wigan
-Adebayor against Man Utd in the Champions League Semi Final home game
I also recall Glenn Helder being absolutely attroicios in an away game against Sheffield Wednesday during the Bruce Rioch season but the memory is a bit hazy now

Best - Henry Vs Leeds 03/04 saeson,he got 4 goals and was unplayable, remember the leeds defenders hacking fuck out of him clean through, stayed up took the piss and still scored,we were superb that night.

Worst - Denilson at home to Bolton last season, gave a pen away, gave the ball away every time, clueless in possession, crowd got to him big time, you could physically see him breaking down.

Best

Brady v the Spuds at WHL 1978 - the 5-0 win, he was quality, he glided over the pitch like a god, sprayed brilliant passes all game, and when he scored his belter, his celebration was quality.

Worse... (joint effort)

There must have been loads, but I can remember Denilson and Diaby against WBA (home) last season as being very, very shit, it looked like they were misplacing their passes on purpose, their lack of effort in this game was evident to all to see, even Wenger, but I still don't think he subbed them at half time, I think he waited until 10 minutes into the second half!!!!

Arsenal: Henry in the come back against Liverpool at Highbury, including his solo goal for the third.

Overall: Beckham in the qualfier against Greece. England were rubbish but Beckham was immense and seemed to be doing the work of three England players, and finished it with that freekick. Amazing.

Best
Henry against Leeds at Highbury 03 - 04..

Due to the lack of importance to the game it is maybe not as special as it could have been but I would add this Bergkamp perfomance among the very best I've seen as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeUy7Iy77Uc

Worst
-Igor Stepanovs when we lost 6-1 to the Mancs at Old Trafford, no doubt.

I remember Lauren having an absolut shocker against Spurs at Highbury as well where Wenger actually took him off at half time. I think it may have been 04/05.

Funnily enough he was his usual lazy self that day and using the words of our wonderful manager 'he scored four but did little else'!

It's easy to pick out certain games for individuals but on his day, Henry was genuinely unplayable. Remember once at Liverpool where he started 5 yards behind Carragher on the touch line, kicked the ball down the line and just glided past him. I know Carragher is a carthorse but it was just wonderful :barscarf:

One of my favourite Henry moments....this happend after Mills had been trying to put Henry off earlier in the game by saying something (god know what) to him before Henry took a penalty.

There are many candidates in both catagories....Best ever..Brady 79, Keown at Old Trafford in '02..but I would go for Jack against Barca at the Grove, outstanding performance in any language..even more so given the quality he was against n midfield.
Worst ever.I think that all players go through bad games/periods. What is worse is when it is done with indifference. If a player is not good enough to play for Arsenal then it is the fault of the manager that he is there at all. What sickensd me is to see undoubted quality not fancying it or going through the motions. Anelka FA Cup semi replay V Man Utd in '99, Arshavin on too many occassions.

Worst was definitely Gus Caesar in League Cup Final against Luton.
Best possibly Rocky away at Aston Villa in the late eighties when we won by about 6

Igor Stepanovs vs Sunderland, League Cup at Highbury 02/03 season. We threw away a 2-0 half time lead to lose 3-2 thanks largely to the big number 26.

Almunia's two performances against wba last season must be up there.
As for best performance there have been many, one that sticks out in my mind was Seaman at Elland Road in an FA Cup replay some great saves, one in particular diving low to his post to keep out a chapman header.

Best: Henry v Liverpool 2004. 2-1 down at half time staring at 3 defeats in a week when he grabbed the game by the scruff of neck

Lehmann: Cardiff 2005.Most one sided cup final ever.It was the Mad one v Utd.And the Mad one won

Bergkamp v Leicester greatest hat-rick ever

Brady: 79 cup final

Alex Manninger v Wimbledon 1998.The game before United.Wimbledon bombarded us for 45 mins but Manninger was brilliant

Worst: Gus Ceasar v Luton

Stephanovs v Man Utd 6-1.Still have nightmares about that game

Adebayor both semi finals v Man Utd in the CL.There's nothing worse than a non trier. This *word censored* was a disgrace

Eboue:Wigan.Passing to the opposition and tackling his own teamate.Should never have played for us again

Flappy:Wigan,Blackburn,Porto,Chelsea,Newcastle,Tottenham should i stop now?

Ray Hankin and John Hawley were the worst any time they played for the Arsenal!

Vladimir Petrovic only played about 30 games for us but I think he played blinder in a number. I think he scored two against WHU and was outstanding.

Against us - Stefan Effenberg was brilliant as was Zidane.
