Someone like Vidic then? He's the ONE player I'd love us to sign. If we had him we'd walk the league. Imagine a Vidic-Vermaelen partnership!richpye wrote:Not even in the same league.1989 wrote:Fuck Samba, fuck Jagielka, fuck Cahill. Buy Hangeland.
I am still not convinced by any of these names. Although I am sure they would all improve our defensive options I really like the idea of findind some Slavic hardman. Like a Serb who looks like he may eat Croatian children for breakfast.
And why you dismissing Hangers? Fulham conceded less than Bolton, Blackburn and Everton over the last couple of years and the big Noggie was a mainstay in their defence. Not to mention, his aerial stats are better than all of Samba, Jagielka and Cahill. He's also at the right age being 29-30, fully experienced in the PL, Champions League and Europa Cup, and won't cost much. At 6'5", he would sort our long ball problem out!

I am certain Hangeland would improve our defence. I just think there must be better about. Anyone would be an improvement on Squillaci.
Vidic-esque would be ideal. There must be someone similar out there
The Arsenal transfew window slammed closed with the signing of Gervinho boys.
So its Gervinho, Jenkinson, Miyachi and then "like a new signing" duo Vermaelen and Frimpong.
113 pages into the thread and I'm no closer to being convinced that the gormless joker 'managing' our club has changed his ways. He's back with his squad again in pre-season so the same gutless streak that sees him too scared of dismantling the squad by getting rid of his so called wonderboys like Vela and Fabianski, has come to the fore once more.
£10m for Jagielka - is the guy off his fucking head. On one hand he gets appalled by Barca's derisory offers for Cesc then he decides £10m for a guy in his peak years, of proven PL class and three months into a four year contract is a decent offer.
Has anyone told him it isn't 1998 anymore ?
I've tried to stay away from all this transfer bullshit rumour stuff as it has driven me insane over the past three seasons, but I know it is eating away at the club we all love.
Another season of listening to drivel and watching spineless capitulations under the GIC........we deserve better

Now he can say he tried to sign someone. And we all go again next year. Someone wake me up when his contract is upSteveO 35 wrote:

In this affair though its not wenger who is getting on my grill - hes been at this for years and i honestly didnt expect anything different, nothing left to do now but wait for all of the fans to turn or his contract to run out. Its Gazidis. Why doesnt this empty suit say to the old goat "so you want jagielka? I'll go get him." I think i may have answered my own question with the empty suit part.
I'll never forgive david dein for trying to get us to play our football at wembley but he was excellent at player acquisition and gazidis sure aint no DD in that regard.
He offers £10m for a player on a 4 year contract.....having had a £12m offer rejected last season when the player was virtually out of contract.
It beggars belief and really does give me a bad feeling that for all the rumours we will end up falling just a few million short of getting anyone to address our gaps.
Can't believe that we're fast approaching the start of the new season and we've still not addressed any of the seemingly agreed shortfalls from the last, have lost a key player and may still lose two more..... Unbelievable and, if things go the way we think, unforgiveable!

You're absolutely correct about Gazidis. I mean what has this guy actually done since he's been at the club ?LDB wrote:Now he can say he tried to sign someone. And we all go again next year. Someone wake me up when his contract is upSteveO 35 wrote:

The last set of half year financials were down on the previous year, even when you strip out the impact of the property company i.e. he has taken the football earnings backwards. He hasn't renegotiated a commercial deal worthy of the name, he's inflated the annual wage bill for £9m, then he gives a pathetic speech about the 100% rise in utility costs and passes off inflation at the customer's (i.e. us) door.
Then to cap it all, he talks about the "busy window" and sits back doing sweet FA while all our rival clubs have their business sorted early on in the process, and has allowed key players to run down their contracts.
The guy is absolutely fucking clueless. No connections in European football, unlike Dein, and therefore unable to close out any major deals. The day he was appointed Arsenal took another major step in the wrong direction

I like chesney and would love him to be a star for us but it is hard to put up an argument against signing the ajax keeper for a fee aroung the 6m euro mark. I know that 5m has been rejected but it cant be that far off the mark if they were willing to let him discuss personal terms with roma already

" In the last six seasons, the Arsenal boss has spent £66m in the summer months.mcdowell42 wrote:http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... arket.html
Yet this pre-season alone, champions Manchester United have forked out £52.4m on a mix of youth (Phil Jones and David de Gea) and experience (Ashley Young).
Meanwhile, Arsenal's priority positions remain unfilled, as they have for the last four seasons. If you're not totally convinced by keeper Wojciech Szczesny, then why stand by idly as Shay Given signs for Aston Villa.
Want a centre-half? Make a derisory £10m bid for Jagielka, some £2m LESS than you offered last summer.
Yet key players like these should have already been signed.
It's not as if the club are short of funds. The move to the Emirates has been such an off-field success already Arsenal have built up cash reserves of £110m.
No wonder the board and fans are baffled. No wonder some fans are not renewing season tickets. It's almost as if Le Prof doesn't get it.
Drastic action is required. It CANNOT be the same-old, same-old.
The Gunners need marquee signings, players to set the blood racing and quicken the pulse.
Wenger, of course, may have some cunning plan. And that by the start of the season the established players the fans want will be in place rather than a few of his customary left-field purchases.
Yet you somehow doubt it. It's not his way. But it bloody well should be. "
I Have NEVER known of such a thing before...it's usually the manager of a club who is plaguing the life out of the chairman or the board for funds to spend...We must be the ONLY CLUB in existence where the board are actually trying to force the Manager to spend Millions of pounds!!! [I Truly TRULY just DO NOT UNDERSTAND!

When Martin goes online

It is quite clearly his own vanity and ego and stubbornness, as he wants to prove that his 'project youth' can work.OneBardGooner wrote: I Have NEVER known of such a thing before...it's usually the manager of a club who is plaguing the life out of the chairman or the board for funds to spend...We must be the ONLY CLUB in existence where the board are actually trying to force the Manager to spend Millions of pounds!!! And credit where it's due, many people did laugh at comical wenger's "I think we can go the season unbeaten" quote, and were proved very wrong.
I think it must also have something to do with the fact that Ferguson did it with his golden generation, even though Hansen famously said "You can't win anything with kids", and now we are stuck with this until his contract ends.
And believe me, if things do not change then there is no way that Kroenke will give Wenger an extension, and both sides can walk away without any loss of face.
What everyone must see though is that Wenger has had substantial amounts of cash available. Even as far back as summer 2007 the Board were telling everyone that would listen that they had £70million for Wenger to spend.

Looking at the figures that are available now it is also quite clear that we have about £35 million that is available to spend. ( without even mentioning the possibly £80m cash from players that we could/should/ have to sell. ). We have cash of £110m, but £23 million has to be kept as debt service reserves for the stadium financing, which still leaves us with £87million cash, but running costs for the next half of the financial year of £40m , plus outstanding transfer fees still owed of £13m, so still leaves us with about £35million. ( courtesy swiss rambler ).
Also, all the cash from the property sales, as the property business is now debt-free, as PHW stated, so ALL future sales will/should boost our coffers.
Nasri £20m
Cesc £40m
Clichy £7m
Bendy £9m
Diaby £4m
Eboue £3.50
= £ 80,000,003.50
+ £35million
= £115 million pounds.
OK, we would have to replace the above players, but FFS, we have the cash - and of course our promising youngsters just waiting for a first-team chance.
