In that case you dont go within a million miles of drugs, let alone the hard ones.

Didn't rate her songs very highly and thought her voice was wasted on them tbh. Not my type of music but she was a very talented singer. And it is always a tragedy when someone dies young with so much of their life left to live.

But I have limited sympathy for anyone that wastes their life like that (I've had two friends do it). My real sympathy is with her family, particularly her father who seems to have tried everything to save her. I have a 7 year old daughter and a 6 year old son and the thought of watching either of them grow up to waste their life like that is absolutely horrifying.

I can see both Quartz's and LBD's point on this tbh. But I don't think it is black and white. Because of her wealth and status, Winehouse had more opportunities to beat her addictions than the vast majority of people that suffer from those same addictions.

I wonder, if Paul Merson's drink and drug addictions had increased, and he ended up dying (circa 1996-97), would people be coming on here saying that they've no sympathy, he made his own choices and he fully deserves to be dead?

Yes

Edit: oh wait, deserves to be dead? Nobody as far as im aware has said that. I just dont have any sympathy for her.

There's not much point debating this as it's highly unlikely anyone will change their mind, but people addicted to various drugs and such like are generally good people that have lost their way and are, in some cases, beyond help. Rather than boldly claim 'It's all their fault', maybe we should just feel sorry that there's been yet another casualty and leave it at that.

Sure but just for the record, i dont think anyone but the most brutal criminals deserve to be dead.

you can apply the merson argument to that of gazza.

had the talent, the money, the opportunity but srewed it up. it wouldnt surprise me if he doesnt do a winehouse soon. at least merson appears to have sorted himself out and maintaining a level.

correct me if im wrong but winehouse never really committed to the whole rehab thing, never did it cause she wanted to sort herself out. you know if you have an addictive personality or not, if you choose to act on it then you take the consequences.

its not as if she was so famous in a princess di sort of way that she needed the substances to cope with the pain, etc.

her lifestyle of choice has killed her.

She was very famous though, and I doubt in the last three years she could have walked down any High Street in the UK without being recognised at least once.

The pain/fame thing is not clear though.
She might have been fine with the fame?
Certainly living in a crowded place like Camden is not keeping a low profile.

But her lyrics strongly suggest she had emotional troubles.

I don't think it is bold to say that someone who was given a life and was able to take it onto a better level of fame/fortune than most of us would, has fucked it all up and can be the only one accountable for their actions. Even as much as they have led to her paying the ultimate price.

One thing though, she was a junkie. And junkies may have once been normal people who have lost their way. But remember people who are seriously addicted to heavy drugs will do anything to ensure they consume more of those drugs.

Winehouse was rich enough to be able to fund her habit. But what of those addicted to similar substances who rob pensioners at knife point for a fiver? The ones who take it further and end up killing people for another hit?

I can't see that this was a casualty, like she had no other choice and was a victim.

TBH I have just read Merse's book and he comes across as a brainless waster and an ignorant cunt. I'm all for him spilling the gories but he makes himself out to be a total twat. I would have zero sympathy for him. Arsenal legend but a total fuckwit off the pitch.

EDIT; should add that zero sympathy is alot different to deserving to die. No one has said Winehouse deserved to die. But the sympathy for her is limited.
