Barcelona president Sandro Rossell forced Alexis Sanchez to change his shirt for his official unveiling - because the forward inadvertently turned up wearing Real Madrid's colours.
Might be some truth to those stories -
Check List Correct and Present
1. No centre back
2. No defensive midfielder
3. No left back
4. Another 2 attacking midfielders
5. Another striker
6. Yet another injury
If there is truth to the Mata signing and Cesc inevitably ends up leaving, then personally I find it hard to get excited about it all. Until he ends up adding a couple of robust, experienced defenders we're going back to the start of the conveyor belt.
Find young talent from overseas, develop into a top class PL player over 3 seasons or so, player approaches end of contract, holds out for £150k per week, declares love of Barca / Real etc, leaves club and is replaced by player back at the start of the cycle.
I just don't understand when this 'project' reaches maturity. We came close in 2008 and then for various reasons Hleb, Adebayor, Flamini, Gilberto, Diarra etc all gone in the blink of an eye for various reasons (with one common denominator for all of them barring Gilberto i.e. the club wanted to keep them but were unable to). Then we went back to trying to replace the experienced midfielders with Ramsey, Coquelin etc - no doubt talented players but 3-4 years back in the "production line".
So Cesc goes, Mata comes in. Nasri goes, replacement comes in.
Why will the 2011 version work better than the 2008 (or indeed the break up of the Invincibles which saw the start of this cycle)
Have to be honest i dont know a lot about Mata so just googled him and it says he is a winger. So he is not a replacement for Cesc and Do we need a winger?

Do we need someone to run down the wing, beat other players and cross the ball.
Yes, we need one of those!!
Along with a CB, DM, LB, and possibly Gk and Benzema

Doesn't matter what it says on the tin, Flash. In Wengerworld, you can play anywhere.
Yes we need proper wingers if wenger reverts to 4-4-2 but in the present formation I think that it is pointless buying a winger then training him to a new position and new responsibilities in a different system.
On the subject of assessing mata can I just say that I personally rate him very highly and I believe if his attitude is good he will become a great player for us - that remark isnt meant to be a slur on his attitude in the past but more reflective of how any quality player seems to get pissed off playing with shit players not long after joining us We all know that downing was overpriced and we have all heard the usual defence of that deal (natural winger, great crosser of the ball etc ) but mata has so much more to his game and I would love to see him join us to replace nasri

but arent the highlighted positions more in need of strengthening? Mata has been touted as a replacement for Cesc if he goes and quite obviously he isnt
