The lessons of Wengerism for UK society

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The lessons of Wengerism for UK society

Post by Cus Geezer »

Whoever said football and life were two different things is talking through his hat.

Life in Post-Thatcherite Britain is slowly grinding to becoming a mean spirited shitehole.

As a relatively recent graduate I have found far too many jobs requesting experience even for entry level stuff and far too many jobs that are temporary which don't give you time to learn your job and boot you out at a moment's notice.

This malaise runs very deep - TV programmes are axed for poor ratings, ignorant of the fact that the most successful programme in UK TV History (that's the history of UK TV, not the channel) Only Fools and Horses looked a lame duck in the ratings for two years. Pop acts are dragged in front of smug tossers and asked to sing and then instantly told to fuck off, ignorant of the fact that some of the biggest selling acts such as U2, The Jam, Blur took a few years to hit their stride - it even happened with the ultra commercial Boyzone and Take That.

Football since Abramovich seems to be following suit - people were writing us off for not signing the finished articles for big sums of cash and tipping Chelsea and Liverpool for the title - two sides that personify the id that screams for instant gratification, £30m for him, £20m for him....now where's my title.

Wenger went against the grain of all that - the Hlebs, the Adebayors, the Flaminis, the Senderosses and the Almunias were used as examples of why we would fail and now their all part of why were not failing. Arsenal are a blue chip football side, yet have gone against the grain of what blue chip companies do in this Thatcherite Uptopian toilet of a nation. The above mentioned players all graduated from the leagues of Spain, France, Germany etc.. They had shown their worth there, they had shown Wenger their worth in training, he had stood by them when others were telling him to spend it like a lottery winning chav.

We have won titles before, but this year it will be a moral victory. It may just be football, but the principles of management and skills development are universal.

Sorry to give you the bad news guys, but when Wenger retires from being Arsenal manager he's not going upstairs to the boardroom. He's going to be President of the People's Republic of Great Britain and boys I'm leading the march.

No winning the title this year will double as a moral victory.

Whereas Spurs glorify empty handedness

You also have to remember that if Wenger bought some big name in the summer and flogged those players mentioned, some other club would be benefitting from their talents and also any sell on value

This is one moral victory that will pay dividends

Which is why I'm beginning to want this title more than any other that we've competed for before.

I've been thinking all season that we may lose out in the run in and been psychologically prepared for failure, I now want that title and want to stick it to not just everyone in football, but the whole of UK society.

This is more than a game, there's an ideological war to win

Good article, Cus. Make it a bit bigger and then send it to "The Gooner", anyway I wouldn't be surprised if it'd be printed under the letters section.

And but for Clichy's day dreaming today could have been another triumph for Wengerism.

We wait two years for Theo's first premiership goal and two come at once.
