Our new goalkeeping coach ...

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

is Tony Roberts. He will be a full time assistant to Gerry Peyton. He's just stopped playing for Dagenham and Redbridge.

I'm a rose-tinter, but this appointment has really made me question what's happening at our club.

Yes assistant coach helping out with the reserves according to .com.

Which has done for years part time. I dont see anything wrong with that.

what if the guy is competent? we have to admit that is a possibility, and no one can be sure of the opposite unless someone watched him coaching for a few hours...

lads, it's terrible times at our club, the board lies, the manager lies, we don't do what is obviously necessary etcetera etcetera. but we must not lose the ability to judge things impartially. the fact that things are bad do not mean every single decision the manger/board take is horrible. look at gervinho for example, looks to be a quality offensive player and cost us relatively little.

i find it a bit immature to simply go complaining about everything without analyzing the information properly. and that's something that happens a lot here

He's seriously experienced, so that counts in his favour. I don't think anyone can have a problem with this really, what evidence do you have to go on?

Agree with bG here, how can we judge? I also hate the term 'offensive player' its Wenger-speak :banghead: in England we call it an attacking player :banghead: :wink:

I remember David Seaman stating before he retired that he wanted to get involved in the coaching side of things, if memory serves well Wenger wanted to keep him on as a player/coach in a backup keeper role in 2002 but Seaman opted to go to Man City to be there number one, very brief it was there too.

Wonder what happened there?

Tony Roberts was actually a quality keeper, he had a bad knee injury and gave up the game a few seasons ago only to turn down a guaranteed insurance payout to carry on playing the game at a lower level (with The Daggers) I remember him playing, a very similar keeper to Shay Given, same style and stamp... give him a chance, hopefully he'll do well and overtake the tit that is Gerry Peyton...

Well he's been working with Shez for years so he's not done too bad so far.

On Big Dave, Wenger filled the role when he went to City, he offered it but Seaman went off. Only his fault really

You couldnt fucking make it up, could you?? Some of the best defenders in the last 20 years, bould, Keown, dixon, winterburn, Adams but as discussed no fucking defensive coach!!!

Harsh choice, but funny.

My brother is west ham, but he goes to watch the Daggers as well with his kids when he can, and I also keep my eye on them when results come in, and on the telly, and Tony Roberts is a great bloke, allegedly.

while i do agree that we need to change things on coaching level, i would also like to point that great players don't necessarily make the best coaches. many examples lead to that.

having that said, keown did a wonderful job when he worked with us, so maybe it could work again.

so to sum it up: my post defends both sides and gets to absolutely no conclusion at all. absolutely useless, just like almunia and db10gooner. 8) :lol: :lol: :wink: :wink:
