The Gunners had a bid of £10 million – made up of a £5 million downpayment and a number of performance-related add-ons – rejected by Southampton last week.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is being lined up as a replacement for Nicklas Bendtner (PA)
Saints chairman Nicola Cortese said the club wants a bigger fee up front, as well as insisting on a hefty sell-on clause.
This is what annoys me most about our football club! When buying why do we never offer the going rate? It's embarrassing..We used to be seen as A BIG CLUB,sadly those days are disappearing FAST..P P

My understanding of bidding is : we have a price - they have a price and you meet somewhere in the middle...... NOT we have a price take it or leave it

Germany defender Per Mertesacker has admitted he fancies a move to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old Werder Bremen player has long been linked with a move to Arsenal, who are in the hunt for a new centre-back.
"For a national player it is a good thing to get experience of playing abroad," Mertesacker said in the Bild newspaper.
"I have said that England excites me."
Mertesacker, who is a regular in Joachim Low's Germany team, can leave Bremen on a free next summer so they may be tempted to cash in on one of their most highly-rated players in the current transfer window.
Sporting director Klaus Allofs said: "Should Per say that he wants to try something different and it is interesting for us, then we will sit down together. We have enough defenders."
Arsenal are on the look-out for defensive reinforcements and have also been linked with Bolton's Gary Cahill and Everton's Phil Jagielka.
Wenger would have been slaughtered for buying another youngster.bradders wrote:BELGIUM international Romelu Lukaku arrived at St Pancras station this morning ahead of his medical at Chelsea. only £18m![]()
