Re: HE'S NOT WRONG
I suggest you get your copy of Fever Pitch out again and read the chapter where he tells us of his time "SUPPORTING" Cambridge Utd while at university.
Fazackerly it's not like Highbury was a million miles from Cambridge its 1 hour on the train , but Nick the superfan took 3 years off watching Arsenal.
Arsenal through and through !

The thing about Nick Hornby is that he was honest, and a good writer.
He never claimed to be anything other than what he was, which was a middle class home counties kid who got into supporting Arsenal (I think when he was about 13?) and has been passionate about the club ever since.
Never claimed to be in a firm, or on the books of the club etc.
When people have a go at him I just think they should write their own book if they are so unhappy with what Hornby wrote.
I also think that at the time "Fever Pitch" was published he never expected it to sell many copies, it was likely to be more of a minor interest book bought by a few hundred Arsenal fans and a couple of hundred specialist football book collectors.
So credit to him for selling so well and making a living off writing which is no easy task.

I shit Hornby's
Quartz you would be surprised to hear that I enjoyed the book immensely and a lot of the emotions we have all felt (well nearly all) he described well.
I just have always thought that for him Arsenal was a take it or leave it thing and if he had wanted to make it to Anfield that night he could have done.
Unfortunately he unwittingly spawned a whole load of new football fans and made it socially acceptable amongst thatchers children for one to go to the footy, these people I have little in common with.
Im not saying football is for the masses only ,there have always been people from all walks of life who went to football, I just find myself at odds with what a lot of modern football fans bring to the Arsenal except their attitudes .
As for making coin from it Good for him,at least he can write .

I do agree he was part of a change in the way football was viewed by some parts of society and a change in attendances.
There was a change starting from our win at Anfield in 1989 (which I reckon being prime time TV on a Friday night captured a lot of people's attention and reminded them how exciting football can be) and Italy World Cup 1990 on to the European Championships here in 1996 and a very good World Cup in France in 1998.
The Premier league got underway, prices rose and seating became mandatory.
I think that sections of society rediscovered there love for football after falling out of love with it from the late 1960's on.
But as you say Herd, there were always people from all walks of life, especially at Arsenal.

A bloke on a donkey with a blue face; 4 screamers in leather and a rope that passes just past a leather posing pouch before going round a donkey's neck.
You don't see that round where I live. I saw a lot of it when I lived in Castro, San Fransisco but we don't talk about that anymore . . . . .

Is it art?? Is it creative?? Or is it just an excuse for 4 camp cowboys to dress up??
