Assuming that we have indeed signed Meersucker then I can't imagine that we'd still be looking to pay £12+ for Cahill unless.....
- Vermalen is out for the long term
OR
- Either Meer...(the German guy), Cahill or Vermalen can also play DM or full back.
If either of those are correct then I would imagine that Arsenal are quite happy to walk away away from the deal as a tactic, given that Samba is also still a possibility. Suddenly Arsenal don't look so desparate!

If fairness why not?
We're too use to having only two first chooses that we are now forgetting about quality backup options.
ManU have Ferdinand, Vidic & Jones....let alone Smalling.
Even we had Adams, Bould & Keown and when Bould went we had Campbell.

Maybe we're not even signing Mertesacker & it's all a ruse to get Bolton to accept a lower offer for Cahill. Wow, it's like Ocean's 11, or Inception, or an episode of Bergerac or something. Of course, if we were doing that we'd ineveitably end up stuffing up both deals & have to resort to re-signing Silvestre.

The difference boomer is that manure hadnt got as many holes in their squad to begin with. We went into this off season knowing that we needed at least 3 quality players to be real challengers this season but instead we lost our 1st choice left back and our only 2 creative midfielders Working that logically it means that we need 5 or 6 players to bring us up to the required level and so far we have gervinho and park(dont talk about ox cart or jenkinson cos they just not ready yet) who might lift us up to that so imo that means we need at least 3 more levelquality players in our starting 11 before we blow 14m on a back up player
'Arsenal have had a 2nd bid for Gary Cahill rejected. "Way short" of £12m price. Rumoured that second Arsenal offer is £8 mil'.
So after offering £6 mil, Wenger pushes the boat out and offers £8 mil for him. Never mind. When he's on a free next summer and has Citeh, ManYoo, Chelski and Milan chasing him, I am sure he will choose to join Arsene's little fairies!!!

Agree but you have to start somewhere.
Maybe he only has faith in TV5 and non of the others.
It's all about timing. If and this is an IF the situation presents itself then we shouldn't sit around (ironic I know!) but try to make the deal.
Also baring in mind TV5 past injuries.
I guess given Cahill and Bolton's situation they've tried to make something which at present hasn't worked. Maybe its a bluff but then the situation changes in 6 months when he's available to talk to clubs.
