R.I.P. Wade Belak

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

R.I.P. Wade Belak

Post by cusamano »

Wade Belak (July 3, 1976 – August 31, 2011) was a Canadian professional ice hockey forward and defenceman.

He hung himself at the age of 35 on August 31

John Lu wrote a nice article about the man.

He played in my hometown - Calgary - for a few seasons. Was very surprised to hear about his death, and it follows similarly with some sad losses in the hockey world lately (including Rick Rypien, who also died committing suicide after battling depression, and Derek Boogaard).

Belak was not a premier player by any stretch, but it still acts a stark reminder that professional athletes - even with their extortionate wages - are still people too.
Contradictions. The enforcer and the loving family man. The funny guy, whose life seemed like an open book, died under circumstances shrouded in mystery. The cruelest contradiction -- a vibrant young man who will never get to carry that spark into old age.
Well said John. RIP.
