Zonal markng has proved to be successful with many sides in the past, but our defence just can't seem to do it....

So back to basics for our defence i think.

AGAINST.

If that is the case then that isn't zonal marking, I always thought zonal marking was marking zones across the 6 yards line and clearing anything that falls into that area, I'm also led the believed that zonal marking is shit and has never really worked, anywhere, so whoever's brainwave at Arsenal thought it would be good to employ at our club should be hung up by the bollocks!!

Well Samba and Dann were in Santos's zone then.

I am being over simplistic here but other teams can tell their best headerers to go stand in Arshavins zone

Just the two examples, Chelsea, who probably working on drilling the defence more than we do (if we do at all), zonal marking for us should be thrown in the bin along with Wenger and his backroom staff.

There's a lot of fucking nonsense talked about zonal vs man marking. Both systems can work equally well, but as said elsewhere it really comes down to the quality of the defensive unit to start with.

I'm sure Dixon, Adams, Bould and Winterburn could work either way

...just as sure as Djourou, Koscielny, Squillaci, Santos and most of our back line never will be able to because they are simply sub-standard.

That strange, mysterious formula of buying or grooming decent defenders always appears to work

the only reason people dislike zonal marking is because EVERY TIME a team concedes marking zonally, the post match analysis goes on and on about it..
which means that every goal you see scored from a set piece that DOESN'T involve a ten minute discussion on zonal marking, was down to man marking failing.
either can work if players do their jobs, the problem is there's ways and tricks to thwart both styles (ie blocking runs and crossover runs in man marking). man marking didn't work for us the last 2 seasons so why not try something new?
the worst that will happen is we'll repeatedly concede from set pieces, but we were doing that anyway so we're no worse off!

It doesn't fucking work but neither does man marking.

So I guess zonal marking. Because it ain't failed quite as badly as man marking. Yet.
