Goetze saga

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

SteveO 35 wrote:g88ner, I think we're in violent agreement mate. I certainly wouldn't label any of our famous back line greedy bastards - Dixon, Winterburn, Bould and Lukic (yep people forget the guy) plus Seaman - all left smaller clubs to join us. Anyone labelling them greedy back in the day would be deluded. Similarly I don't think Cesc is being greedy either: I genuinely believe that a 150k per week wage would not have kept him here. He gave it 8 years and won next to nothing and his boyhood club are winning everything. I don't call that greed

Adebayor however joined City as one of the first band of mercenaries before there were any chances of trophy success. The other examples I mentioned I put into that bracket too. There are plenty of others but we would be here all night. Look at someone like Winston Bogarde at Chelsea - he was on 80k per week and played about a dozen games. His team may have been winning trophies but he wasn't getting any personal medals and allegedly shunned countless offers from sides on the continent where he could have won domestic honours, played regularly but probably on half the wage.

It cuts both ways I think.
Yes, Bogarde was a strange one - the money grabbing c*nt!

But although you'll always get extremes, I do think it's very difficult to de-couple greed and ambition when, at top clubs, they often go hand in hand.

Take Nasri for example. Greedy or ambitious?

On the one hand, his wages have probably doubled, so there's a financial motivation... but, on the other hand, can anyone really argue that Arsenal have more potential to win trophies that Citeh this season, or anytime soon? - not really :? some might say he was never going to get into the Citeh team so it must be greed that motivated his move, but top players probably always believe in their talent and believe they're good enough to break into the team... that's what ambition is! - going as far and high as you can!

I'm pissed off with Nasri for leaving because it felt too soon, but to be honest, for an ambitious player, going from Arsenal to Citeh (or several other of the world's top clubs) is a logical move.

Van Persie is in a similar situation now... should he go with his heart and re-sign for Arsenal? or does he have an ambition to win titles and the CL? - if so, he needs to disappoint the fans and leave.... the money grabbing bastard!

Question is how we can get out of this money cycle? Maybe salary cab?

Tomas, I don't know anything about him mate. Seen him play once. Not saying he's good, bad, average or brilliant. If he is brilliant and worth £25m then Arsenal will not sign him. I did point this out to everyone when they started getting all excited over Hazard and Benzema, neither of whom will be joining Arsenal either

I know exactly what we've become. We will never pay £20m for a player under this manager and ownership structure. That's fine if you can't physically afford it and criminal when you have a cash float of £80m earning 2% in the bank.

Hopefully you'll never be owned or managed (at board level) by a bunch of American clowns who know fuck all about football

Signed! Yes...in German football we still have the so called 50+1 Rule...that means that no investor can overtake a club. With Leverkusen , stupied Wolfsburg and of course Hoffenheim you have three clubs were it is a little bit different. We had today the meeting of the club members and there was a petition from the Fanabteilung (7.000 BVB Fans are organized there) that this rule has to stay..http://www.bvb-fanabteilung.de/neuigkei ... regel.html (unfortunalety it is only in German) and this petition was passed by the club members which is great.

BYW,
Thomas

The financial fair play regulations that UEFA are implementing are supposed to be the answer, as clubs will supposedly be restricted by their income.

But most people are sceptical to say the least. Time will tell, I guess.

I can not see that this regulation will work...I can not see how the spanish or italien clubs are playing are fair game...

I think Eden Hazard would be a better purchase.

With all due respect steve o, we have been run this way by a board of *word censored* before ever the yank took us over and placing this all on kroenke's doorstep is unfair - however wait tow more years of this penny pinching under the yank and we can all blame him for everything :barscarf:

Gotze and I will stay until 2014," the former Rot Weiss Ahlen man told Bild.

To be fair, they have a pretty good informed sports section and are spot on with many transfer rumours. Apart from that, the paper is indeed crap.

Regarding the article 1989 posted: Großkreutz was only joking there, don't take his statement to serious.

If those quotes are true (easy Tomas!) then I fear signing Goetze without Grosskreutz would be akin to signing Chmakh without Gourcuff and we all know how that turned out... :s
