Not sure if that is directed at me but I'll address it anyway.highburyJD wrote:Song did absolutely brilliantly for our winner
yes he lost the ball a few times to many
but he managed to win it back a lot as well
My opinion is people who have decided he's not good enough just watch for mistakes to confirm their prejudices
I for one have not "just decided" he's not good enough and go looking for his mistakes to justify my opinion. That's a silly thing to claim.
I have watched him since he signed and based on watching him play and make the same mistakes week after week after week over a period of years (and watched as he has failed to learn from those same mistakes) and based on that my opinion is he is not good enough to be a first choice DM in a team that has ambitions beyond mid-table.
His improvement of a season and a half ago was based on his role being massively simplified in the middle. Get the ball, give it to a better player quickly.
Now he seems to think he is a Vieira type player and can pick up the ball and stroll forward with it. Well, he ain't that type of player - he hasn't got the touch, vision or intelligence to be dribbling forward or to be exchanging intricate one touch passes with Ramsey, Jack and RVP.
You say he "he managed to win it back a lot as well"? I'd say why should he have to "win it back" at all? Why put himself and the team under that type of pressure through his own poor decision making and poor passing?
I'd also disagree that he recovers often enough to justify him being there at all. Far too often he loses posession and then just tries to wrestle the posession back off the oppo player, conceding stupid unnecessary free kicks in the process.
Song would be a good player in the Championship or Div 1 but he is not good enough to be first choice DM in the PL. We have to set our sights higher than him.

good post db, though i disagree that he is not a PL player - i think he is not a player for any of the top 6 clubs, but i reckon he'd be an important player for the norwiches and wolverhamptons of this worldDB10GOONER wrote:Not sure if that is directed at me but I'll address it anyway.highburyJD wrote:Song did absolutely brilliantly for our winner

Fair point, BG - and I'd probably concede that one. But as you say - not for the top 6. I would qualify him being good enough for a lower PL team by adding; only if he simplified his game again and stopped losing such easy posession when under no real pressure.brazilianGOONER wrote:good post db, though i disagree that he is not a PL player - i think he is not a player for any of the top 6 clubs, but i reckon he'd be an important player for the norwiches and wolverhamptons of this worldDB10GOONER wrote:Not sure if that is directed at me but I'll address it anyway.highburyJD wrote:Song did absolutely brilliantly for our winner

DB10 unless you were sat in front of me at Carrow Rd (fat bloke red top, short black hair, bit sweaty constantly moaning about Theo and Song) then no I wasnt specifically directing the prejudice accusation at you
but I think we are all guilty of it
once anybody has made a firm decision of on the qualiy of a player its very hard not to have it 'corroborated' by what you see
confirmation bias is an extremely strong force
I use to rewatch whole 90 minute games whilst confirming stats and taking notes - Lauren I thought was a weaker link in our team (the longer he played at RB the better he got - basically I was wrong) yet I would remember his misplaced passes so much more readily than those of Vieira or Bergkamp

in the end, he is a player and will do what the manager tells him to. i'm sure his stupid forward runs leaving much more capable players (like arteta and wilshere) having to cover for him would be strongly diminished if the manager really wanted to... in the end, your players only have the freedom that you allow them.DB10GOONER wrote:Fair point, BG - and I'd probably concede that one. i'm sure that under the guidance of tactically more strict and disciplined managers like pubis or the walrus, he would become a better and more disciplined player. happened to wilshere in only a season! you can see jack has the ability of a winger (which he was!) but still knows when to use his tricks and when to do the steady defensive work or just give the obvious pass to the player close to him. song on the other hand hasn't a clue.
i can almost see song trying to dribble through the arsenal defence in training, to the delight of a smiling wenger clapping and saying "yes my boy, go on!"
