How would you define London?
Was having this conversation with a mate today.
How would you define London geographically?
He reckons it's anywhere within the M25. I disagree.
I reckon it's anywhere with a 'points of the compass' postcode. I've always thought of places like Enfield, Kingston, Dartford, Watford as part of Surrey, Middlesex etc...
What'd you lot reckon?

OK... example.brazilianGOONER wrote:i'm very interested in seeing the replies to this, as after a whole week in london i still don't understand quite well those concepts... county, borrow, city, town, fucks sake you englishmen like to overcomplicate things
Google maps says here is an example you may understand.
County : Rio Grande do Sul
Borough : Petropolis/Rio Branco/Bela Vista etc.
City : Porto Alegre
A town would be somewhere like Canoas.
London is
As north as Camden
As west as Hammersmith
As east as Docklands
As south as Pimlico
Anything in that imaginary square. The rest is suburbs. I live in a London postcode but if I was showing a stranger around town I wouldn't venture anywhere outside of those locations to show someone the best of London.
It really is a great city.

Romford, Bexley etc, I would not count as London. They are outer London boroughs but tbh, I reckon the only reason they were created was to bring up the 'population' of London. That's my conspiracy theory anyway.
The real compass points postcodes I'd also use to say what is and isn't London. Then again Chingford is very Essex-y and that's E4 so I suppose it isn't a hard and fast rule.
I often have this discussion with people too. It's a favourite topic of mine as a pedant.

I also enjoy this discussion.... Think Chingford is the exception to the rule... Know a few Chingford lads from Arsenal... Think of what would happen if Danny Dyer shagged one of the birds from TOWIE... Not good!LyusN1 wrote:Romford, Bexley etc, I would not count as London. All these guys who live in hertfordshire, surrey and essex give it the big un ...

If you weren't born with the smell of a rasta's ganja, then you aint London pal!

Check out the map of the boroughs

Really you can only go round the circle of
Hammersmith and Fulham
Kensington and Chelsea
Westminster
Camden
Islington
Hackney
Tower Hamlets
City
Southwark
Lambeth
Wandsworth
The rest is too far out, it's all suburbs.
I'm Barnet, with a compass point postcode of NW4.
It ain't London. Well not the London I would show to anyone who wanted to know what the City looked like.

Re: How would you define London?
Disagree. Enfield has an EN postcode and yet is the biggest borough of London. Don't really see how anyone can disagree with that.SWLGooner wrote:Was having this conversation with a mate today.

*Edit: Bromley looks bigger but I was always told Enfield was the biggest. Still fits my point though as Bromley has it's own postcode.
