The search for an Arsenal ‘anthem’ (18/6)
The Impossible Dream is the perfect club anthem. The lyrics are excellent, it is relatively slow and simple so to set a tempo is easy. It becomes more emotive towards the end. It is simply fantastic, and it would sound terrific at the ground.
If we could get that going, we would be able to create a formidable atmosphere on big games.
Please let it be The Impossible Dream.

I think this is an excellent topic for discussion, and hopefully one that comes to fruition. I sit with the Red Action group in Block 6, and the amount of noise we try to create, which hardly gets over to the other end of the stand is so frustrating. I agree that we need an anthem to unite everyone just for 2 or 3 minutes at a time. Liverpool don't have great songs, and if it wasn't for YNWA, then it would be a lot quieter up there on matchdays.
There have been some great nominations. To throw my hat in the ring, I would nominate 'One' by U2. I think it ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to 'anthems'. It has a rousing message of togetherness, solidarity and a united front. It doesn't have that many complex words or verses, which would make it easier to learn. It builds to a crescendo with the lyrics - one blood, one life, carrying each other etc.....
One way or another, I hope this gets off the ground as we need something for our new ground. However, as it is very subjective, it may be hard to get off the ground. I hope we can, however long it takes, as it would be just what we need to get the whole stadium working together for a change.

The Impossibles!
The Impossible Dream might be a bit difficult for a crowd to sing, but if people like it, how about using these words:
To score the impossible goal,
To beat any challenging teams,
To fight, like there is no tomorrow,
To win and make real all our dreams.
To save the unstoppable shot,
To challenge with all of your might,
To shoot though your legs feel too weary,
To play in Chapman’s red and white.
This is my quest, to follow Arsenal,
No matter the weather; how far we travel,
To fight for the right,
To display our football,
To be willing to march into grounds,
And 3 points take them all.
And we know if the fans all stay true, then we won’t fail this test,
Then our team they will surely prevail,
Cos The Arsenal are best.
And football, will be better for this,
That one man, we call Arsene Wenger,
Still believed, in the dream he was building.
To win, every cup in football,
One team, and our name is Arsenal.
You have to sing it with the tune or it doesn't scan obviously!
Well I like it, but I guess I would!

London Calling
I would just like to throw in London Calling by the Clash..
London calling to the faraway towns...
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls...
London calling now don't look to us
Quit holding out - take another breath
London calling at the top of the DIAL
After all this won't you give me a smile?
Strummer from the Clash was a big gooner i believe he wrote a song called Tony Adams listen on youtube to london calling at high volume what do you think

I love London Calling, but it's too fast paced.
And Strummer was a Chav, he was just great friends with Tony Adams.
The Impossible Dream would improve the atmosphere significantly. Once we get it going, other songs will come easily as well. It'd be a great base for the atmosphere at Ashburton Grove.

Or "I'm a twenty somthing Nick Hornby reading who thinks its far to common to sing Ya" Unknown arstist

Re: The Impossibles!
mzk90,
Fantastic effort with the lyrics mate. They are both Arsenal related and scan well with the tune. Certainly the best adaption of Impossible Dream so far.
There is only one problem: I f*cking hate the idea of using that song.
As good as it sounds when you hear it in your mind (or on a car advert), it has a key rise/change before "This is my quest, to follow....", that will prove too awkard to reach for a lot of people - much like when singing "We Are The Champions" by Queen - and it could sound really shit (Gooner.Ed please note!!).
It is also - in my not so humble opinion - way too long and certainly too wordy for most people to remember, regardless of what lyrics we use.
Nonetheless, and without meaning to sound patronising, it was a very good contribution and you deserve an A for effort.
By the way - the geezer that suggested 'The Frog Song' has got to make sure he keeps his appointments with the men in white coats. F*ucking nutter!!
That toad him!!

The Implausibles!
ECD, no offence taken. I take your point about the key change, which as you rightly point out always makes me laugh when crowds try to sing "we are the champions!"
I would normally stick to short ones and to the point. I believe I may have started the "You might have won the treble but you're still a c**t!" one that we adapted for teddyw*nk from the original after the 99 season.
Just thought I'd have a play and try to make the lyrics at least a bit relevant!
Gawd knows what the club might lumber us with!

Some people are campaigning for The Impossible Dream it seems:

It makes sense. As I said, it is the perfect club anthem. And no, it won't sound awful as long as you don't sing like a with the back of your throat. No offence, just "project" your voice and it should be no problem to sing it.
When is the referendum? This song should be picked ASAP so that we can get it through as much people as possible before the first home game of the season.

My friends and I were thinking about it and we decided to endorse Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Additionally, Roger Waters is a Gooner.

Wish You Were Here (Waters, Gilmour) 5:17
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
here's the criteria and it satisfies every single one. i'm not sure if any other club has ties with it but it's perfect.

New Anthem
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band used to do a stirring rendition of the Impossible Dream. They also did another number called "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" if you want something a bit more unique but just as effective.
Could tweak the lyrics slightly to suit the cause.

What is the matter with everyone? I don't understand why Arsenal fans have to have an 'Official Anthem' thrust on them by people who think they know best. If an anthem is required it would have made itself known organically, that's the way it works with football fans.
I really wonder if the posts on this thread are serious or just taking the piss. I hope the latter but I suspect the former.

I have to agree with Marcomarcos on this one.
Although I appreciate the need for trying to generate a prematch atmosphere, I don't think there's any need for an "anthem" as such. We should just start a few more renditions of "we're by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen". Admittedly its a song thats sung by other teams, but at least its something we can insert the word Arsenal into. I think there's more chance of people joining in with that, than with irrelevant songs from the past.
