The Art of Chipping

The Art of Chipping

Post by richpye »

Couple of opportunities today to finish a chance with a chip and neither attempted. It just got me thinking about Wrighty in his pomp, I am certain he would have attempted at least one of them.
It then got me thinking that other than Rooney a year or so back, I actually can't remember a chipped goal being scored for ages.

Is the art dying? Are the modern balls to lightweight to make it possible? Thoughts?

The new-age balls definitely don't have the weight and drop like they used to. I also think we're in an age of better goalkeepers and faster defenders - the opportunity to do the kinds of chips you used to see don't present themselves as often, and as a result I doubt players get much practice doing it as they come up in the game.

Has Carlos Vela ever scored for us with anything other than a chip?

Good point Quartz. It seems a player either only scores chips or never does!

There is a technical difference between a chip and a scoop though.

I prefer the scoop to watch, zero backlift so totally unreadable and less pace when it hits the deck.

Karol Poborsky brought it to international attention in Euro '96 but I was foxing goalies with it long before that. :D

Are you claiming to have invented the scoop? You should be loaded

I know, but it proved incredibly hard to patent.

Two chips against Schmichel...GREAT!  :barscarf:

I do think that Theo's Swansea goal and RVP's Norwich goal are differnce types of chips. These are more one-on-one's and raising it over the floored/diving keeper. Still a chip but not in the terms a long range chip.

Bergkamp was the king of these.
