although it will be interesting when we get a LB, because Kos and Vermaelen at the moment would be my preferred Centre backs
It would be nice to have too many players for a change, but if we get a LB back I think Kos will go to RB until Sagna is back.

I thought Sagna was back in training and should be back in a few weeks

That one goes on the list too Red ! A fucking belter that one :D

Let me answer a question with a question if I may

What did he do right today? And if your answer is the goal-line clearance then wind back the replay and watch the 20 seconds or so that lead to it !

Adams is on record as saying that when Wenger came into the club he looked at the back four and came out with something along the lines of "Well, you guys know how to defend so we don't need to work on that"

As SteveO has pointed out (I'll have to look out for the book by the way) they were only that good because of the work they put in.

So what then did Wenger teach Keown if he felt that he already had it down?

I can only put our shambles now down to him not working on defence as much in training. It really really shows when they can't even pick up a man each at set pieces.
And what about the Invicible back five of Lehmann, Lauren, Campbell, Toure and Cole? None of those had previously worked with each other so what you said above doesn't apply to this group of defenders and yet they managed to pull off one of the greatest feats in modern football. All with the same tactics and training carried out by the same management.

There is an element of the unknown about our defensive coaching.

MM99 is correct when he says that the same coaching team oversaw three titles under Wenger.
Number 5 is correct when he says that defensive drills are vital regardless of personnel.

Wenger was a defender.
Pat Rice was a defender.

I have heard from someone close to the team that training focusses a lot on short passing and improvisation.

Keown's spell on the coaching staff co-incided with a record clean sheet run in the Champions League, with a makeshift defence.
Yet is has emerged that Keown was not an official defensive coach he was just getting his coaching badges done.
And it is believed Senderos walked away from him when he tried to give advice.

I think it ultimately has to be a mix of well coached players, and quality players, who make up a good defence.
In addition, the defenders must respect each other, and have confidence in each other to work as a co-ordinated unit.
I think we fail on this part.

That must be down to the manager and the coaching staff for failing to successfully practice defence.

Because I think we do have decent defensive personnel, international players.
Not the very best, but not too shabby on paper either.

augie wrote:Steve o in your opening post you admitted that kos was absolute muck last season but has since turned it around big time so why so quick to write off the bfg ? :o

As I have said numerous times lately, the big german is being asked to play in a shambles back 4 that has no full backs and also play behind a defensive midfielder who cant defend  Put a quality DM like de jong in front of him and I have no doubt that you would see a big improvement in not just bert's performances but also the back 4 as a whole.

On the plus side I feel his reading of the game is excellent and he is the only organiser in our whole team - it cant have escaped anybodys attention that we seem to be playing the offside trap more lately than we have in a long time and it is bert who organises them. Unlike some who shall remain nameless ( ) I quite like the fact that when he gets the ball he just lays off a simple 10 yard pass to those more equipped to do something with it

On the negative side I have to say that I am absolutely baffled by his performance in the air - it isnt just that he is getting beaten in the air but also he doesnt seem to be committed to winning the challenges either  Of course this could be an aspect that might improve when he gets used to the physicality of our league but I cant say that I am certain of that though.

One last question.......how many of you can remember the absolute slating of kos after the 8-2 debacle in old shatford earlier this season ? The guy was written off as a dud and nowhere near good enough to be in our squad but all that has changed now - is it possible that his form has picked up because he is playing alongside someone like bert who organises and talks him through the games ? I am not saying for certain that this is the reason but it seems to be a big coincidence that his form has improved so much since the german came into the team

I will hold off judging the guy until next season
I suppose in fairness my expectations of him were a lot higher and that has probably impacted my view. Koscielny was an uncapped centre half that had spent most of his career in Ligue 2 and the highest level he'd reached was Lorient in Ligue 1 mid-table. It was obvious in his first season he was under-equipped but in fairness the guy has clearly worked his bollocks off on his physical attributes and become better for it

I will wind the clock back to the 8-2 too. What everyone, almost without fail, was calling for was a beast of a centre half that was equipped to deal with the pace of the PL. This was also shown up time and time again last season - The Britannia and the Reebok prime examples, as was the pathetically soft header Kaboul scored to complete last season's 2-3 shame against the Spuds. If Mertesacker was supposed to be that guy then I'm afraid he isn't. How can a man of 6'6" be so consistently outjumped by smaller players in a team that was crying out for someone to dominate. The case for the defence seems to be that he is a) an organiser and b) a simple user of the ball.

Well in response to a), I must have had my eyes closed since he came into the team because all I see is a quiet lad that looks lost. What little organisation there is seems to me to come from Vermaelen and Chesney.

As for b), well if that is what 80 odd caps is all about then big deal. There are dozens of centre halves that play a nice simple pass. I'm not knocking that attribute by the way. As you say, far better to keep it simple than constantly give possession away.

Song is shit, lets agree on that point, and that wouldn't help any CB in the world. We had the perfect answer in Lassana Diarra but he was a "bad egg" (spare me please) and we let him, Flamini and Gilberto go, signed Ramsey and over-promoted Song. Just one of a dozen examples of neglection of duty that spell out why the Self Harmer needs to go now.

However, Song's inability to play that role does not excuse a guy's ability to consistently lose out in the air to much smaller players and from having the pace of a carthorse. I'm not sure he'll ever be able to improve those 2 points either. I think being a CB in leagues like Germany and France, is far easier than the PL. When we roll up to the Britannia, Mertesacker will get exposed for exactly what he is and it will not be the first or the last time.

Too early to decide. We've hardly been settled at the back.

I agree with augie he deserves time to settle into English football and gets no help from the lack of full backs and the brainless lump in front of him that is Alex Song.

He needs to improve but also needs to be given time to do so

Given that he is an experienced German international, it would not have been too much to expect him to adapt to English football quickly. Giving the example of Kos who took his time to get used to the pace and physicality of the Premier league is well and good but we have had quality defenders like Verm and Sagna who had come in from much lesser leagues than the Bundesliga and immediately set the ball rolling. They have had the brain dead Song helping them out as well.

Vermaelen is quite capable of organising the defense, what we needed was a physical centre back who is strong in the air and is not shy to tackle hard. Mert is a gentle giant with very little presence for a man of his height, not really something we needed.

I think he's a system dependent CB. According to the reports I've read about him in the past he played best when he had 2 DM's sitting in front of him. However as soon as Bremen stopped playing like that he got exposed (especially when having to play a high line) & had a poor couple of years. In the right system he could be a good CB but we don't play the way that suits his game & I don't think that's suddenly going to change. There's also talk of him losing his place in the German team for all the same reasons he's struggling with us.

I'd love to hear the defence for Mertesacker for the build up to the first goal

Nothing to do with playing behind Alex Song this time and I'm glad ESPN have just put the spotlight on it

What the fucking hell is he doing trotting out into midfield allowing Keane to just ghost behind him.

Where's the experience that these 80 caps bring??? That goal has fuck all to do with coaching, tactics, systems, other players etc

It has everything to do with the fact the German plank is a fucking walking liability

All defenders make mistakes, you gonna bump this up everytime Mertesaker makes one? Get over it.

You get over it. What's the matter ? One of your favourite's made another mistake and you can't take it ??

What would have happened had Almunia, Diaby or one of your other hated players had made one? We'd be up to 30 pages by now

 Keep on making assumptions about me, you're making yourself look like a fool. How do you know if i hate diaby and alumina or if i prefer Mertesacker over others? You don't, so don't act like you do. I take things as i see them. I was screaming at Henry for giving the ball away twice in quick succession and he's my favourite player of all time so i don't 'defend' players for the sake of it. Your childish bumping of this thread after Mertesacker's misake was a joke. All defenders make mistakes, especially when they haven't evne played a full season in the league/the team yet. God knows how you'd react if he had made the same mistakes that the likes of vidic have made against torres, or terry in rcent months etc...

Finish your homework son. Honestly....

I was under the impression that this was a forum where players could be criticised, or do you prefer the Arsenal.com approach of all round praise.

Read the threads on here - if Song, Walcott or the players I mentioned make a mistake we have endless debate about it. That's kind of the point about a fans' forum.

The reason I bumped the thread up as you like to call it, is rather than childishly hijacking every thread to make the same point (no names mentioned), I thought we should contain it to one or two threads.

There are people like Augie for example who are quite happy to promote Mertesacker's qualities and enter a reasonable debate about his mistakes without getting all touchy about it. Perhaps when the GCSEs are finished you can join in the grown-up debate.

Just to please you next time, I'll post about Mertesacker's mistakes in ten different threads just to be with the 'in crowd'

There's so much shite in your post that i'm not even gonna take the time to individually rip it apart. Instead i'm off to enjoy my winnings of the bet i placed at half time for arsenal to win. You carry on bumping up this thread everytime Mertesacker puts a foot wrong just to make yourself feel better. Enjoy your evening.
