THE FORUM AS IT IS NOW

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Re: THE FORUM AS IT IS NOW

If I've taken what Mike says correctly, swearing itself isn't the problem. The problem is - where do you draw the line? I think we can all agree that someone saying "for f**k sake, Diaby" on the match thread is a lot different to calling someone a see you next Tuesday. However, given the sheer amount of swearing that there was/would be, it would:

First: take a massive effort from all of the mods to check every single bit of bad language out to ensure it's acceptable. Which, in all fairness, shouldn't be a huge problem given the influx of new mods.

Second: for a lift on the swearing ban to work, there needs to be a clear and detailed set of examples for what is and it's acceptable. This may seem a little unnecessary but think back to (insert poster's name here - I forget now) and Babatunde with the "Nigerboy" thing. No one knew whether it was okay or not. Some were offended. Some weren't bothered. Some were offended because the original people got offended. It was a big mess.

Third require an acceptance from all forum users to take responsibility for what they post. I think the feeling from Gooner Towers was that, if the users of this forum are trusted with using their common sense, they'll throw it back in your face. Whilst Mike has said that he is willing to reconsider the strict rules on this forum, I'm afraid that it'll never go back to being no holds barred like before. Without moderation and guidelines, on this forum, "for f**k sake, Diaby" quickly becomes "what the f**k was that Diaby, you useless c**t?" which quickly becomes, "I f*****g hate that c**t, Diaby!" which quickly becomes...[ad infinitum]

For the last time - this place HAS NOT become a sterile internet page where you can't express an opinion, so can this whole "The Gooner doesn't like it if I express an opinion which is anti-Wenger" thing be put to bed now? Please. It's getting annoying. Mike invited all of you to suggest a constructive and analytic way that will allow for the rules to be relaxed and NO ONE has sent him anything. Not one thing. If you put as much effort in to messaging Mike as you did to whinging about how you'll be carted off by the Thought Police, we could really get somewhere with the forum.

Criticism is fine, but be constructive with it. That's what I've tried to do here. If you do that, then I'm sure you'll all get what you're after (including me).

However, I still firmly believe that the one element that mdae the forum such a success has been taken away.

Like I said before M-50 got all high and mighty and removed my posts, there ate literally 1000's of forums like this and they are sterile, joyless places with little or no users.

I understand why people are suggesting that the great and the good of The Gooner have sold out.

Changing the forum name is the biggest sign that the powers that be want to disassociate the forum from the comic they produce while still having the 'kudos' of running an internet forum.
Percy what is it that has been taken away? i still cant see what it is? Personally i dont mind swearing here but surely removing that cant have ruined the forum??? The banter would still be on here if you and the other lads who make this place a laugh stopped worrying about how the forum has changed and got back to how it was. Yeah calling Wenger or a poster who you disagree with a ****** **** is banned now but i dont think thats a bad thing in hindsight.

As for the name is it really a disassociation from the fanzine? You can access this forum via the fanzine website and it still has the name Gooner in it, and the url is onlinegooner.com/forum.... how are they trying to distance themselves from it? The fanzine im guessing is run as a company and you tell me a company where calling someone a **** on their website pages would be accepted?

Im not turning this into an arguement im genuinely not but if you, Hebnry Norris, Sid and many other posted in the same light hearted manner as you used to this forum would be as good as it was without everyone being a ****

Personally I see no wrong in calling diaby a c**t. Or song for that matter. In fact I think it is something that should be actively encouraged 8)

We have not been asked to restrict criticism of the club. It's drawing the line between "AW is a c" and "AW is a stupid w"for giving Ricky a new contract. If it's so easy to do, please write a rule and post it here as a straw man.

My take on it (swearing) is thus; you can still swear, it'll just be asterixed(?) out, no problem.

For those who are upset about the ban, just take a look back through any USMartin thread, or, even worse, anything with **** posting.

It seemed that you could only get banned from the OG if you were physically outside someone's house with a can of petrol in one hand and a lighter in the other.

Keyboard warriors and under-moderation are why we are at this stage I'm afraid.

Er, the word above that has been cencorsed is MrGnu1958, why the hell is that banned? I think I've shot my foot off with my argument. Down with cencership!
