As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

WUM. And the reason why this club accepts 4th place as a successful season every year. When your have the highest ticket prices in the league and make more than enough money to compete with all the top clubs in the transfer market, your aim should be THE TOP, not 3 spots below the top every year.

A very promising defensive midfielder, who if he continues on the upward trajectory he has been on this season, will be a regular starter by the end of next season.
Yeah that boy's got it.

Yep, you got it. I remember it like it was only yesterday when they were persuading the supporters to part with thousands of pounds to sit in a new concrete bowl.

"Our priority is to finish in the CL places"

Not a mention of competing with Europe's elite was there? Still, you can rewrite history to suit your argument (or rather to suit your rant).

Top Londoner makes some good points

I ignored this thread when i first saw it as I thought it was about our reserve midfielder

what I dont agree with though is that we "have overachieved" . We havent.
We have done the bare minimum required this season, but why I am happy at the moment is because we are taking momentum into next season and with some promising youngsters who can only improve under Wenger's excellent management it is onwards and upwards :barscarf:

Agree with this Red Member but will it be the same scenario as every season for the last 5 years ?

Good core of players with one or two true class
Promising youth prospects / squad players who we hope will kick on
Only need 2 or 3 key players to knit our squad together and be back as real challengers..............

But it never happens does it ??

Arsene played with sub standard goalkeepers for several seasons costing us points, games, cup matches and trophies, insisting that "we have 3 world class goalkeepers" :banghead: (they were Alumina, Fabianski and Cheszney in that order)

Arsene played below par defenders, Eboue, Djourou, Sqillaci, who were not worthy of a place in our team and often played players out of position such as Bendtner as a winger, Eboue as a left midfielder !!

IF he has seen that his previous blind faith has been wrong and rectifies some of the errors, i will be very greatful but it will be several years too late and has already cost us trophies and will probably only be because of the vocal displeasure that has been aired by Gooners not brainwashed into thinking that he is infallable and that our great club would perish without him.

There's nothing more cringeful than someone saying "respect the manager" etc. when he fails to respect the fans year on fucking year. And btw GG won trophies in a shorter time than AW, lets see what other records dear Liar has broken?

I think Wenger has now set the record for the longest trophyless season for an Arsenal manager post WWII?

First Premier League team to blow a four goal lead (You just knew it would happen when they came back to 4-2).

Given us our worst defeat in 115 years was it?

Lost more finals than he's won.

Set new standards of neglection of duty after handing healthy contracts to the usual suspects.

Possibly been given more UEFA touchline bans than any other manager in more than a decade and even broke one so he could ensure his precious CL qualification.

Plus I'm sure there are others that I've forgotten, so yeah continue to worship Wenger while he treats our club like a toy just like he did at Monaco before he was sacked.

And RM, third/fourth is not the bare minimum and neither should it be.

Good post Stuart.
Agree with all of the above and can add that for these reasons alone Wenger should be gone.
Add to that his transfer fiascos, defensive incompeptence, lack of tactics/plan b, humiliating defeats, blind faith in sub standard dross, lowering of standards, etc, etc...................
Wengers position has been untenable for a long time.
I am at a loss as to a) how he hasn't resigned by now, and b) how he hasn't got the sack by now. Oh and c) how he hasn't been given the stick he so richly deserves by the media. Everyone quite rightly says how our 'arry is a media whore, but my god for some reason the media still think wenger is the dogs, some kind of guru who revolutionised football and therefore "knows best" :banghead:

Up until 05/06 we'd finished 1st or 2nd every season with Wenger right? With Wenger's obvious love for fourth place and seeing it as a trophy, it's not good enough compared to what we were. Yes I know decades ago fourth would have sometimes looked impossible but so many AKBs are so happy to accept being also-rans. Not really a winning mentality.

Yeah, but for all of RM's wumming, I do agree with him on this. He isn't saying that 3rd/4th place is something to be happy with. But it is the bare minimum that a club like Arsenal should be attaining. To me, I start every season hoping that we win the league, but if we don't then I hope that we at least qualify for the Champions League. Simple as that. I agree that we should have our sights higher than 4th, but I don't think that finishing 3rd or 4th is absolutely unthinkable either.

Yeah Coquelin looks a great prospect, much better than I'd have guessed tbh. Seems like he could be a genuine box-to-box midfielder too, which seems to be a rarity these days - can only really think of Yaya in the premier league. :?

No guarantees with young players obviously but I imagine Jack n Ox, Coq would be a real handful.
