Quartz, we've been in it for 14 years buddy and we never sign top players and certainly don't retain our best ones in recent years

Whats the point of constantly qualifying for a tournament we have no ambition to win.

This will probably surprise some people but I would rather we won the FA Cup this season than finish in the top 4.
we havent won anything for too long now and it is no good saying top 4 is as good as a trophy.

all those who voted for a top 4 finish I take it you are happy with Wenger in charge?
of course I am happy with Wenger in charge even though we wont win anything because I dont believe any other manager could have done any better than him this season with the squad as it is

The question is a bit too simplified, if mousers win both cups, they can celebrate as much as they want, it won't however disguise what a poor side they actually are. Next season they will realise that in no uncertain terms.
I would be happy with winning any cup, as long as obvious shortcomings addressed, and the cup run wasn't used to paper over the cracks.

I dont know why Liverpool are getting so much criticism.
they could achieve what we did in 1993 and I remember that year far more than say 1999

Its all about expectations management though Red. I agree to a point because I have fond memories of 1993 - first team to win both domestic cups in a season - and I'm amazed people look back at it now and dismiss it in favour of a top four finish.

But Liverpool booted Hodgson out for being mid-table, never game him the same money or chance as Dalglish who spent over £70m alone in Carroll, Henderson and Downing. Surely you'd be pissed off if Arsenal were mid-table scrapping around with Swansea and Sunderland ?

wont happen though will it because Wenger hasn't learned where 5th place or worse is in the league table yet :D

I voted for trophies as well. But as regards 1993, there was only 1 team per country in the European Cup and so there wasn't the kudos in finishing 4th. Also the UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup weren.t to much behind the European Cup in prestige.

so finishing 11th and winning two trophies far outweighed Villa,s season in finishing 2nd.

at the moment FA & CC cups everytime, our record in the CL in the latter stages ain't good and only 1 final appearance. and i think we are only in it at the moment, just to generate more cash for the board

our current squad ain't good enough to win a CL, so bit pointless worrying about finishing 4th

mcdowell42 wrote:Even though the money generated by being in the CL is a must for any club can anybody actually envisage us ever winning the CL.We hear the whole time from wenger that we have been in the CL FOR 15/16 seasons in a row and thts an achievement, but for all those years we have only got to 1 final and lost it.I can never see us winning the CL so basically we only finish top 4 for the money and maybe to attract a better type of player.

Now if we could have won both cups and qualified in top 4, to me that would have been a good season.

Look at Liverpool. Thrid time in row then wont be in Cl. Reina and other topplayers in the team willabandond the ship, and they will not get top players because of that. For me it means we are better than them overa all.

If you read the post in different forums, poll supporter are moaning o´ver Kenny and remember the won the Carling Cup!!! If we have done the same, you loy were callng for wenger head!! shame on you

A player like M'Villa will choose us instead of Poll if we get in get top 4. If Vp will leave us, we will manege. We have beeen relegated many times since Virera lefte us. What happen! Cesc cam.e...when henry left...RVP came...If RVP leaves, another will step in...trust me...Woldoski? Gervihno?

We were 17th in league at the beginning of the season, and if we get in top4, for me it will be like winning the PL!!!

If we scraped the league cup on penalties against a championship side and found ourselves mid-table in the league with only a few games left then yes I would be calling for Wenger's head. This thread is based on a hypothetical choice about what we would prefer if the two outcomes were mutually exclusive. As it turns out they are not so my minimum expectation of Wenger is top 4 with a full effort made in all 3 cup competitions.

Yes, Gervinho to be the next RVP :coffeespit:

I get what you're saying, the club will go on without RVP but the point is that surely as a club we want to build on what we have not enter yet another "period of rebuilding".

At the moment the Pl league is not as strong as it was 5 years ago, so therefore we can still go top 4. Sad to say....

Gervihno was meant as a top player. not a regular goalgetter. If podolski cant get use to the pace, he will come good. Saw him several times on German televison

Winning a trophy from time to time is not too bad, you remember?
