Wind-Up Merchants

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

1. Posting things contrary to general opinion just to get a reaction from other posters and not bothering to respond when the logic and accuracy of the post is questioned. It is difficult to judge whether the poster actually believes in what he has posted rather than trying to wind people up, but some here have been stupid enough to acknowledge their OTT posts.

2. When the only contribution of the poster is posting negetive stuff about the club and insult/patronise those who disagree. Now there is a no denying the fact that there are a lot of things wrong with the club today. But it is rather strange even for the most realists/sadists of fans to not acknowledge something good that happens or not contribute to any other topics.

I tend to see posters as being one side or the other of a seesaw depending on their views of the club, Wenger, certain players etc.
The WUM is the big kid in the playground who used to stand on the end of the seesaw and push it as hard as possible to make it bounce higher that it should do. Scary as hell, but sort of funny at the same time.

the thing is apart from my Denilson comment last week I like to think that most of my posts are and have been quite accurate. I got a reputation as a WUM when I joined here in September because I used to go on and on saying that we would finish in the top 4. everybody else thought this was crazy but look at it now. I would be considered a WUM if I didnt think we would finish 3rd! :D

Then I said in January we would go on a run when our defence returned and we did. And on this new forum I have said that we have 3 big players - RVP, Walcott and Song and I believe in the last few games they have been proving this.

ok I hold my hands up when I said we were a good bet to win the Champions League though

tbh I dont think red member is a WUM, I've agreed with a fair bit of what hes posted this season even if it is directly opposed to the opinions of a fair few. When some were being daft mentioning relegation, I was saying that you'd still be at least europa league and probably pushing for CL, red member was just more certain of top 4. Equally during the bad run I agreed with red member that there was a good run of games coming up and that you'd start to pick up a lot of points. Maybe he tends to overstate the positives a bit (probably just to counter some of the overly negative views) but a lot of what he has said sounds sensible enough to me looking in from the outside and he's largely been proved right (CL winning aside which I always said was far too optimistic). He's also normally happy to discuss/ debate his point of view which is good, it adds a bit to the forum and he doesnt tend to resort to abuse. Not a bad lad is old red like.

Red, if you look at the results of the poll I set up (which clearly offended Henry Norris and the rest of the Sense of Humour Bypass Club) I think you'll find the perception of you as a WUM has nothing to do with your optimism about a top 3 / top 4 finish.

The main vote for your 'greatest quote' was that the 8-2 defeat to Man United was 'irrelevant' and that we should stop going on about it. That was clearly provocative as everyone felt crushed after our worst start in 58 years.

You also called Chesney 'an arrogant moron' and advocated the return of Almunia

When Arshavin was clearly disinterested you said he should be playing more regularly, you suggested Walcott was underpaid and declared Denilson as one of your favourite midfield players

So on reflection.....do you think the WUM perception is really related to over optimism ??

Football isn't objective and whether you come from Red Hook ,Dublin,Islington,or Hounslow we all have different opinions !

The problem on this site is that you don't realise im always right

safcftm wrote:I see Granada Joe mentions love of bendtner, since no one else seems to love him I assume he's referring to me and he's right, I am serious. I'm definitely no WUM- all my going on about bendy is kept neatly on one thread so it's easy to avoid for those who don't want to read about/ discuss him whereas a WUM forces their "opinion" onto as many threads as possible in order to get a reaction. I just keep my thread as a light hearted thread about a player I've rated since before he went to Sunderland and who the gooners have a bit of a laugh about, it's all in good humour and not meant to wind anyone up.

SWL Gooner has met me in Sunderland and is on my facebook and he can confirm that I genuinely rate bendtner and go on about how good he is "in real life" as much as I do here, including a facebook rant after the qpr game when someone in front of me had kept slagging bendtner off and, having daftly and drunkenly threatened the bloke and told him to "go outside" (cringe), my mates moved seats with me to avoid an incident- I haven't sat in my season card seat since and am moving seats next season as I won't be near the bloke who was giving him uncalled for abuse. So SWL can confirm that my liking of bendtner isn't confined to this forum. I just hold a minority opinion on here that bendy is mint! Away from that thread I just discuss arsenal from a neutral perspective- if you see the posts I've made today they've all just been arsenal related with no mention of bendy, he stays on his one thread!

As for actual wind up merchants- I think if it's done well and triggers debate and discussion it's fine, keeps the place busier if nothing else. Some are just very tedious and don't even attempt to discuss their "opinions" and they would be no loss if banned. If they spoil it for others they should be warned then banned if needed but if like red member they're happy to discuss their stated point of view then I think even if they are on a wind up, at least they add discussion.
All true. This man genuinely and unconditionally loves Bendtner 8)

I don't find Red and Steve to be WUM'S. I might not agree with them but at least you can debate with them. US Martin was the absoloute worst, if I ever see him on here again I won't be back. It's really only Babutundes and his ridiculous rants that I steer clear of as they generally repeat themselves. Nobody can hate the club they claim to support that much.

I can see why the 8-2 offended a few people but my view has always been that by getting into the CL has given the team the confidence to go on winning runs in the league. We were never going to catch Man United so the game at Old Trafford was probably our least important of the season in terms of matches that we could afford to lose
Chesney at the time when I said it was getting too cocky I think - he has improved though and I have been happy to see this - hope he keeps it up
Arshavin was clearly disinterested because he wasnt playing but was still capable of good stuff right at the end. I would argue that he got our current run going by providing the assist at Sunderland and yes I still think Walcott is underpaid.
