What happens if Chelsea win the CL cup and finish 5th? Does 4th place not get a spot in the CL? If so does 3rd place still get automatic CL qualification or do they have to play in the qualifying round?Rosie_titters wrote:If Chelsea win the cup - i'd rather give up 3rd and 4th place -

In that scenario whoever finishs 4th will go into the europa league. The rules were changed when few seasons back when lpool finished outside cl spots but actually won the cl england had 5 teams in the cl so eufa changed the rules so that the holder goes thru regardless of where they finish in the league so therefore who ever finishes 4th lose out.3rd place goes straight thru to cl group stages but as far as im aware chelsea would go into a qualifying game if they were to win it and finish outside top 4.
Re: Rangers v Scum
4th place would not play in the CL and I guess they'd have to play in the EL. 3rd place would be the new 4th place so the team would have to play in the qualifying round.LeGinge (Northern Branch) wrote:What happens if Chelsea win the CL cup and finish 5th? edit: Are you sure mcdowell? Afair the winner goes straight into the group phase

As far as im aware 3rd place puts us thru to group stages chelsea would go into a qualifying round in place of whoever finished 4th

I thought that but I'm sure I read after the Liverpool and Everton fiasco that the UEFA said that the winners would not be guarenteed CL football if they didn't qualify through their respective leagues.
As previously mentioned, lets hope it doesn't come to that...

Re: Rangers v Scum
If Chelsea finish fifth and win CL the four English teams will ALL automatically qualify.
If Chelsea finish fourth, then the team in thrd will need to qualify.
This is according to Kier Radnedge (sp?) in the UEFA magazine currently out now.

Re: CL qualification
Dont give a flying fcuk if we in champs league or not - it is a comp that we are not within a million miles of winning and qualifying for it is used as a trophy for our cash obsessed club
That said, I also dont want to be in the european leyland def league either - thurs night football followed by sunday games would absolutely piss me off and I would rather we tell uefa to shove it up their a**e than play in that

Re: CL qualification
The thing is if we do qualify for the Channel Five Cup then it will give Wenger the chance to play all of our super quality youngsters like we do in the Beer Cup, and get everyone excited by beating Shamrock Rovers and Beveren......getting everyone's hopes up just in time to fuck it up against the Birmingham City equivalent of Portugal when eventually becoming favourites to win the thingaugie wrote:Dont give a flying fcuk if we in champs league or not - it is a comp that we are not within a million miles of winning and qualifying for it is used as a trophy for our cash obsessed club![]()

But isn't it in our long term interest to qualify for the CL and benefit from all the positives that it should bring,
a) enable us potentially to keep RVP
b) attract a better cailbre of player as we are at least in it - M'villa ? Podolski ? Vertonghen ? signings may all hinge on if we are in the CL next season
c) The income from the CL revenue, sponsorship deals, (shirt deal coming up for renewal etc)
d) Another season that the mortgage for the Emirates is being paid down without dipping into the "cash reserves", which I believe to be held back just in case of the non- qualification scenario.
I know that another season of "magnificent consistancy" or whatever bullshit Wenger calls scrapeing 3/4 th place may be seen by him as validating the project and that all in his jardin c'est bon but I can't help feeling that it is better for the club and therefore us as supporters to have matches that we can look back on such as Milan, Barca, Madrid, Juventus, Inter over the years that we can remember with pride even though we didn't go on to lift the trophy itself.

Re: CL qualification
Stuart - excellent points
You will find they are wasted on here though

Re: CL qualification
Stuart does make good points but sadly I think you'll find that they are points more wasted on Gazidis and Kroenke than they are with the posters on here. In turnRed Member wrote:Stuart - excellent points

a) did qualifying for the CL enable us to keep Fabregas, Nasri, Hleb etc? Er, no, because big players don't simply want to be in the thing, they want to stand some sort of chance of winning it
b) attract a better calibre of player. Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa seemed happy enough signing for Newcastle, and Luis Suarez for Liverpool without CL football. Who did we sign - Park and Gervinho. I don't want players at Arsenal that solely want CL football anyway. It should be about the club not one competition
c) The club is majority controlled by an independantly wealthy individual who can make distributions of the cash as he sees fit (and has proved it already). So, earning more revenue from CL is essentially making a wealthy man even wealthier. It certainly isn't making life any more pleasureable for fans
d) Have a look at the accounts and see that the interest payments are already six times covered from free cash flow. The club still decides that its policy will be to make a transfer profit in each window despite CL qualification.
If you feel able to make better points than that Red feel free. Next time you fancy running through an operating cash flow statement and balance sheet with me mate, just say the word.

Nicley countered SteveO - and I did specify should

Have to agree with augie here. spot on mate. The only reason i want top 4 is because it takes a spot away from sp*rsaugie wrote:Dont give a flying fcuk if we in champs league or not - it is a comp that we are not within a million miles of winning and qualifying for it is used as a trophy for our cash obsessed club
