UP FOR GRABS NOW!!

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

No.

1989 was last game of the season.

The Hillsborough disaster was one month previous.

Arsenal could win the title on goal difference, and actually did on goals scored.

In the last minute of the season.

No matter what happens between Man Utd and Man City, the title will still be open.

Not the same, but a fascinating occasion nonetheless and I think most of the sporting fans in the world will be watching.

26th May 1989 was amongst the best moment of my life up there with the birth of my children (but dont tell me wife  )

To win the league against a team like liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 18 years having felt we had blown it for the 2 weeks before this game and to win in the last seconds was incredible. Its the modern day equivalent of going to the Nou Camp and needing to win by 2 goals Liverpool at the time an for the previous 10 years were that good

Tonight's game isn't even the biggest in Premier League history. That was the Man Utd v Arsenal game in Old Trafford in 2002. Utd needed a win to stop Arsenal winning the title on their ground. They didn't and we were Champions. Second biggest game in Premier History was Arsenal V Leicester City in May 2004. Arsenal needed to avoid defeat to become the invincibles. Tonight's game is massive in terms of this season but won't definatly decide the League.
Pre Premier League /sky obviously the 1989 game at Anfield was the most important.

Definitely my finest moment as a Gooner although sadly wasn't there in person. Had a season ticket back then and went to a good few aways but couldn't get to Anfield - was sitting bloody exams around that time !! :banghead: :banghead:

Having grown up with Liverpool winning everything and being the media darlings of the 70s and 80s, it was just the best feeling ever. I actually never thought we would win a title in my lifetime. At the end of the Terry Neill era and during poor old Don Howe's time, the football was mostly fucking awful and a decent cup run and UEFA cup spot was as good as it got. George changed all that and May '89 was the culmination of the past 2 years of building up a team of mostly home-growns and lower division signings into a unit that was hard to beat but played some cracking stuff too. I started to believe it could happen in 87 when we beat Liverpool in the then Littlewoods Cup, my first Wembley date, but nothing topped the league win before or since.

I just hope my lads grow up to experience the same thing one day - its what football is all about. Imagine going to Old Trafford now on the final day of the season, needing to win by 2 goals, and having watched them carry off trophy after trophy for the past 15 years. Then imagine your dream is almost dying and with 91 minutes on the clock one of your favourite players sticks in the winner.

I think that only a CL win could ever come close to beating that evening at Anfield

i totally agree with all you sentiments, that 89 was much bigger. id love to see a moment like that in my life but totally selfishly has to involve the arsenal coming out victorious. (will be a while)

imo, utd vs munich 99 would be only game up there with it?

gary neville's impartiality is gonna be tested to the max tonight!

So many reasons why tonights game does not compare to Anfield 89. The main one is that money was not a factor!

Nowhere near. It's just lazy journalism to bring out something like that to fill up space. If you asked a Man Utd fan, they would probably say that their European Cup finals were much bigger games.

nowhere near..

We had the title all sewn up after blowing Norwich away 5-0 at home, we then had straight forward games v Derby (H) and Wimbledon (H) to wrap it up before the re-aranged Anfield match.

Don't forget we are Arsenal, we don't do it the easy way.

Dean Saunders blew us apart as Derby beat us 2-1 at Highbury and Wimbledon, despite a Winterburn stunner, forced a 2-2 draw to leave us with a mountain to climb as Liverpol had beaten West Ham 5-1 at Anfield.

It is very hard to put into words just how gutted I felt that after 18 seasons we were nearly at the summit, only to slip right back again.

"YOU DON'T HAVE A PRAYER ARSENAL" was the Daily Mirror headlines the day of ther game.

Our coaches got up there late, despite kick off being put back by 15mins

0-0 AT HALF TIME, playing well.

1-0 up through Smith
Micky T blows a nailed on chance.

"somewhat poetic justice" Pleat you :censored:

Up for grabs now........... :barscarf: :barscarf:

We came, we saw, we conquered 8)

On the way home, many scouse familes (I assume Evertonions) came out of their houses to applaud us as we departed in the coaches.

1st coach back at Highbury at stupid o'clock still hundreds of people partying and we were greeted like conquering hero's (the crowd did play their part to the full) with handshakes, backslaps and a 200 strong conga through our coach.

Sunday at the town hall was almost as much fun, i'd never witnessed a major trophy win and boy did it feel good.

The drama and circumstances of that match will, probably, never be repeated.
