Realistic Transfer Targets

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Realistic Transfer Targets

Post by Barriecuda »

Who could, and should, we get at a realistic price? (<15m)

In the Prem, I think Dempsey might give us some grit in the middle for around 12m. I'm a huge fan of Leighton Baines too and I think we could get him for 13m. Hoilett is a Canadian ( ) and could bang in a few goals against weaker sides for 5m?

Outside of England, I like the idea of Jan Vertonghen pairing up with Vermy again and I bet we could get him for 10 or 11m.

It sounds like Llorente, Hazard, and Goetze have finally attracted interest from clubs we simply cannot match offers from.

Does anyone remember Marcus Berg? He was player of the year in the 2009 U-21 tournament and it sounds like he's not thought of highly at Hamburg SV? Maybe available on the cheap?

M'Vila is my dream signing. Should be attainable as well providing the club have the willingness to dig dip to get him.

I'm another for Dempsey, I'd offer Gervinho as part of a swap. M'Vila is the defensive shield we need. As for a left back we should've gone for Enrique last summer instead of the overweight pudding and injury prone midfielder we have at left back. Now we've screwed 3rd we wont get the signings we really need.

David moyes would be a domestic target but if we are looking outside england then frank rijkard would be my number 1 choice - I would rather spend every penny of our transfer budget on getting shot of wenger and getting in a new manager, than buy any players to be destroyed tactically and attitude wise by wenger

If we qualify for the champions league, then we will make noises about buying super quality and then buy some shit players from lower league teams in France for about £5m. If we end up in the Europa league, then we will make noises about buying super quality and then buy some shit players from lower league teams in France or Africa for £2m.

Hoilett's pony, sorry Barrie mate, he's nowhere near good enough.

Baines.
Dempsey.
A good creative CM so we can get shot of Song/Ramsey.

I like Dempsey but wouldn't want us to pay much more than a couple of million for him as, at his age, he's probably only got a few decent years left.
Baines has grown on me but I'm surprised and suspicious as to why no big club has made a move for him before.

A DM has to be a priority and, with a back-up RB and another striker/wide attacker could give us a decent chance next year. Javi Martinez would be my first choice.

Find it funny that this thread is entitled realistic and is then filled with un-realistic targets....

Think only 1 person actually put anything realistic in his post and that was perry

Baines, Javi Martinez( Verthongen), Kagawa ( though i'd take Dempsey, easy), those thogether with Podolski would add a real depth to us, as we'd be able to have a proper bench, at least in some positions. That's not a let's win the league list, but we'd have a safe season in the league and depth to go for cup glory.

I don't watch enough European football to know if the hype around the likes of M'Vila is justified or not, or who the Cisse-esque realistic targets are, but maybe one of the best signings we could make is Newcastle's chief scout, Graham Carr. He's apparently been largely responsible for them signing Cisse, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Tiote etc. Considering the hit-&-miss (at best) nature of our own scouting recently & the fact we seem to restrict ourselves to a similar budget to Newcastle, we may as well try & at least be good at being thrifty if we're gonna continue down that route. Victory Through Parsimony.

I think we're out of the running for the likes of Hazard, Goetze, Martinez, no way we can compete with the other clubs who are after them. In terms of more realistic targets I guess..

Baines
Tiote
Coloccini
Sessegnon
Dempsey
M'Vila
Eriksen
Kagawa
Sigurdson
Huntelaar

Would be nice to get 1 or 2 from that list, but I'm not getting my hopes up. It would also be nice though to get our signings in nice & early, allowing them to integrate into the squad & not being held to ransom over fees (both buying & selling). We made a monumental cock-up in not sewing up the Mata transfer when we had the chance last year, I hope we've learned something from that.
