900 wanna bet he makes 1000

Post by SammyDroppedHisShorts »

Well today was a watershed moment in our great leaders long list of milestones.

900 glorious fixtures in our clubs illustrious history have been managed by the great Arsene Wenger, the man who for the first 650+ matches was seen as amazing.

The last 250+ haven't been amazing, with the occasional great moment being shown.

But which one of the 900 stands out best for you?

And when did you start questioning the man and his sanity?

It's a great achievement, but I seriously hope he doesn't make 1000

winning the league at OT was a highlight,

drawing 4-4 against Tottenham

and i think like you he will make it to 1000, unless ill health stops him

draw 4-4 with Tottenham

The watershed moment for me was the 3-1 home defeat to the mancs in the CL semi.

I had doubts before then about Wenger and whether we could ever recapture the glory of 98-04 but that was the match which really emphasised the gulf in class & quality between us & the teams at the tops for me. It's been a slippery slope since then and sadly the slide shows no signs of coming to a halt any time soon :(

Everton at home in '98. The first of many trophies.

It may have been earlier, but off the top of my head, it was the summer of 2008 after we'd thrown the title away at St Andrews.

We lost Diarra, Flamini and Gilberto in centre midfield and didn't sign a replacement... instead we promoted from within, and went with Diaby, Song and Denilson. As we now know, we've wasted time and thrown away points waiting for those 3 to develop... and you could argue, 4 years on, we're still waiting...

Wenger made a complete hash of that summer, and I found it totally impossible to justify his actions.

And still we're waiting for him to sign a proper holding midfielder :banghead:

Winning the league unbeaten was the pinnacle for me, when we lifted the trophy against Leicester. Seemed like only a matter of time before we would dominate England and Europe especially when we made a blistering start to the 04-05 season.

You could argue that the first signs of some kind of mental weakness was after the OT defeat (Rooney dive) and the subsequent poor run in the league after. However even then we still dug deep and finished 2nd and won the FA Cup, perhaps in part due to the experience and winning mentality of the likes of Vieira, Henry, Pires, Bergkamp et al.

The first doubts crept into my mind during 08-09, amplified by consecutive home hammerings by Man Utd and Chelsea. but it finally snapped for me when we failed to defeat a team that went on to be relegated, in the Carling Cup final last year. That was the chance for this team to show they could do it, could win trophies and be a major force. Think of the boost winning that could have given for the rest of the season, we were still in all the other competitions at that point.

Nearly everything about Wenger's first 10 years at the club has been magical, after that it has slowly become more and more like groundhog day and seeing him as the shadow of the manager he once was is depressing.

The beginning of the end was january 2008.We were top of the league the team playing great football but the squad was threadbare. But the stubborn fool failed to buy the two or three players we needed in the window to push us over the line and win the title and he also sold Diarra  Then came Birmingham and the season fell apart. But did the :censored: learn his lesson after that. Did he fuck.He still wont strengthen in the january windows

He should have gone the following year after the Man Utd CL semi when they taught us a lesson over the two legs

Every season now under Wenger is Groundhog day

Yep, like so many others, it was 2008 when I lost faith in him. The worst part of it was that I just knew that the foreseeable future would have panned out like it has.

Snap. Mine too. Within 10 days we gave 3 of the most spineless and gutless performances you could ever see by our club. Even in the dark days of the early 80's with Hankin/Hawley/Chapman etc did we ever get anything that bad. I've disliked Wenger ever since, now I loathe him and want him out yesterday.

Happiest moment was 98 cup final as winning the double at Wembley was something I though I'd never see in my lifetime. This was closely followed by 2002.

Winning the League unbeaten. The greatest achievement of any manager ever.

To go the entire season without losing in the best league in the world is phenomenal, even more so when the cost of the squad is taken into account.

As for doubts, I still have faith in Wenger. We have been on the end of numerous shocking decisions and injury crisis' over the past few seasons and for that he can not be blamed. He sticks to his guns of playing football the right way and for that I shall always admire him. However, failure to qualify for the Champions League this year and then a less than impressive summer transfer window may finally place me in the Wenger out camp. Until then, however, I'm a firm supporter of him.

So winning a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in one season? Where does that rank then in fantasy land?

My mistake, I've for some reason assumed that this was his 900th league game in charge and thought we were talking about the PL only.

Ignore what I've said.

Greatest achievement by any Arsenal manager, yes.

Any manager EVER? no way. Winning the league is one thing; winning the Premier League, Champions league and FA Cup in one season, like Fergie did, is on another level though.

In the invincible season we lost in the CL to Chelsea. We blew it.

Great domestic team, but we never translated that to European success. United did both in the same season, and that must surely rank above the invincibles. And there's no shame in that; 2003/04 was still a great season 8)

I personally believe he will make 1000 games - whether I want him to or not is starting to become a more difficult decision for me.
I am just about in the keep Wenger camp at the moment, but non-CL qualification and another dull summer in the transfer market could take it's toll.

Best memories for me are beating Everton and winning the Title at OT.

Game 901 will be an even finer achievement if it is won
