Re: Dubious goals panels spoil Henry's record
What an absolute disgrace. I would love to know how they think it was an own goal, it took a slight deflection and from several angles it looked like the ball was going in. I have seen plenty of goals this season which are not originally on target, take a slight deflection off of a defender and are then credited to the goalscorer so why is this one any different?

It was going straight at Paul Robinson until it deflected off Dann. I guessed as soon as it went in that it would eventually go down as an OG.Resident Plastic wrote:What an absolute disgrace. That's an Henry goal that like. Not sure if its "official" (apparently not) but I always thought that at least the unwritten rule was that if the initial shot is on target (regardless of whether it is going straight at the keeper), it is given as a goal to the striker and if the initial shot is going wide and deflects in, its given as an own goal. That shot might not have troubled the keeper but it was on target so should have been Thierry's goal.
Edit: just had a quick look about, it isn't covered in the laws of the game but it seems widely regarded that a shot on target is normally credited as a goal to the attacker if a defender deflects it in

From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Own_goal#A ... n_football
and from http://www.sportspundit.com/soccer/terms/257-own-goalThe fact that the defending player touches the ball last does not automatically mean that the goal is recorded as an own goal. Only if the ball would not have gone in the net but for the defending player would an own goal be credited. Thus a shot which is already "on target" would not be an own goal even if deflected by the defender. Then the attacker is awarded the goal, even if the shot would have otherwise been easily saved by the goalkeeper.
So the miserable *word censored* have definitely gone against the traditional way of assigning credit for an own goal and you have to wonder why, I doubt the Blackburn lad wants it on his record! The player who does this is personally “credited” with the goal; but if the goal is scored after a shot (by the attacking side) is deflected into the net by him, the attacking player is credited with the goal if the original shot was on target.

But it's ok Grant Holt joined an elite group of non top four strikers to score against top four clubs last Saturday even though there was no way that goal could be given to the muppet......

The number of deflected goals that have looped over Chesney this season is ridiculous. The Ramsey OG, Saha deflected shot in the 5-2 and now the Holt goal. The level of bad luck we get doesn't seem to happen to any other team. Aside from the Henry goal (when we were 6-1 up) i can't ever remember us scoring a goal which took a wild deflection this season. I can't seem to remember too many opposition player putting it into their own net against us either.SammyDroppedHisShorts wrote:But it's ok Grant Holt joined an elite group of non top four strikers to score against top four clubs last Saturday even though there was no way that goal could be given to the muppet......
