Anybody thinks we can win the title?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Anybody thinks we can win the title?

Post by DanielD »

Assuming that everything is the same, TT is staying, Wenger is staying, Dein isn't coming back and we don't buy anything massive, do you think we can win the title next season?
Don't want to point the obvious but 80% percent of the matches we didn't win, we should have won and deserved to win. The big question is, can we get better finishing from our players without buying? if Robin and TT will not get injured as badly, will it be a massive change in that category?

Always, we're one of only 4 teams that are in with a shot as always. and despite all of the doom and gloom being spread around i still believe we can win it.

If United could win it last season then so can we!

We proved we can compete in the big games (unbeaten v Chelsea & Man U). We just need to be more ruthless & show a little backbone in the games against the weaker teams. Losing at Sheff Utd & Man City. Letting West Ham do the double over us. These are the difference between us & winning the Premiership.

I think we're in with an outside chance. I base this point on two theories - firstly, I think that confidence breeds confidence. I think that once our team clicks, it is capable of taking apart any team in the country. Hopefully they'll stick a run together or something along those lines, and then who knows? Secondly, throughout the history of Arsenal Football Club, we've (nearly) always performed better when the odds were against us.

Now, I'm not saying that we will win the league, nor am I saying that I expect us to, but what I am saying is that I don't think people should write us off just yet...

Proving your point, I remember wenger came up with this amazing statistics about the matches against the top 4, top 10 and the top 20 (the regular table):
If you'll make a table, that include only matches between the top 4, we would be first, 2 points ahead of united, if you'll make the same table about the top 10, we would be second to united by 4 points and for the top 20 we are 21 points short to the manure. We should really get a lot more points against the small teams, than we can think about being champions.

These stats prove that for most sides in the Prem, the limit of their ambition in games against the Arsenal is to just stop us playing. Getting a point is greeted with wild celebrations more usually associated with actually winning something, so their tactics are: get 10 men behind the ball, boot f**k out of anything in Arsenal colours and if we can spawn a goal via a set piece then so much the better.

Much as loathe Man Utd, the reason we beat them home and away last season is largely because they came out and gave us a game. I can only assume that managers of clubs lower down the table give their sides the same advice as Fletcher gives his team in the film version of Porridge: "Remember, whatever happens, don't let them panic you into playing football."

To return to the question, I don't want to jump the gun, but if AW can keep certain players and make the signings which will enable us to finish these sides off when we've been playing them off the park, I'd be cautiously optimistic. Not sure if we'd actually maintain a realistic title challenge, but we'd do a lot better than last season.

Well, i actually believe that we can be champions with the same squad.
If we can get our finishing half decent, we should win 90% of the matches against the last 10. when Hleb was interviewed, he said it was only the luck factor that stopped us from scoring and to be honest, i don't think it's so un-true. If you miss two penalties (Gilberto, Baptista) and an open goal (Adebayor) on the same match (Bolton away, FA cup), you can't say it's only down to our finishing. I'm very optimistic about our chances of winning the title next season and if we sign a decent winger to cover for hleb and rosicky, it will be even better.

Dont want to be negative but i dont think we will win the league without a few additions to the team/squad. You cant say without injuries what if etc..... We will get injuries and need a squad big and good enough to cope. I think we need a player in all of the middle positions ie Goalie, Central defender, Central Midfield, Striker.

I agree Rosicky will be better than last year now he has a year in England and the basic team can compete with anyone but we dont have a big enough squad.

Three things we have to improve on if we are even to challenge next season

1.Defend better from corners and set pieces.Everytime we concede a corner are hearts are in our mouths,

2. Play against the little teams the same way we played against Manure
and Chelski. We were unbeaten against both of them. But we couldn"t beat the likes of West Ham.Newcastle,Everton and Boro.Teams we should be taking 6pts off.

3. A SHOOT on sight policy. The midfield needs to score more goals.

If we can do all these we have a chance but i still believe we need 3 new signings especially for the CL. Honestly i think it will be 3rd or 4th place.

HLEB - YOU PLEB!!

IS HLEB BEING SERIOUS!!? :o

IT'S NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU - AND OTHERS - REFUSING TO FECKING SHOOT WHENEVER YOU GET NEAR THE OPPOSITION PENALTY AREA, OH NO!!  JUST THAT 'THE LUCK FACTOR' WAS MISSING! :x

WELL, LETS HOPE THE LUCK RETURNS NEXT SEASON - WHEN HLEB (FINGERS-CROSSED) FINDS HIMSELF ON THE SUBSTITUTES BENCH FOR MOST GAMES, AND SOMEONE WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO SHOOT TAKES HIS PLACE IN THE STARTING LINE-UP! :D :D

SORRY GUYS, I JUST HAD TO LET IT OUT!!! IT'S ONE THING PLAYERS PISSING ME OFF WITH THEIR ON-FIELD PERFORMANCES, MR HLEB BEING THE MAIN CULPRIT, BUT WHEN THEY SPROUT NONSENSE LIKE THIS...

Been looking forward to your reply to that IHH!

One question given the Tony Saunders Top 10 thread, if Hleb turns into a 15-20 goals a season winger and we win the title because of it next year will you be changing your name therefore dropping your growing posts tally?

YEAH, RIGHT. PULL THE OTHER ONE!!

Post by I Hate Hleb »

FIRST THINGS FIRST: I WOULD CHEER EACH AND EVERYONE OF THEM GOALS BECAUSE THEY WERE FOR THE ARSENAL (EXCLUDING OWN GOALS, OBVIOUSLY! )

IF HLEB SCORES 15-20 GOALS NEXT SEASON, I PROMISE I WILL BECOME HIS BITCH FOR LIFE (AS OPPOSED TO BITCHING ABOUT HIM )

IF HLEB SCORED 15-20 GOALS IT WOULD MOST PROBABLY MEAN THAT WE HAVE DONE THE QUADRUPLE, AND I WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD. HECK, FOR ACHIEVING THAT, I WOULD EVEN CHANGE MY NAME TO 'I LOVE HLEB' IN TRIBUTE! :o

HOWEVER - BIG WORD, IF!

AS FOR THE LAST BIT... WHAT? YOU TELLING ME YOU'RE NOT ENJOYING ALL THE BANTER?

I know you don't like him, Mr. I Hate Hleb, but to label him a vegetable? Bit harsh!!

Mind you, suppose it could have (runner) bean worse. We are aware that you know your onions when it comes to players, and that you think he is currently not worthy of his huge celery.

As for his lack of shooting; guess he will never be your sweet heart cabbage until he turns over another leaf. Maybe we could dangle a financial carrot in front of him - reward him for each time he (Bean) shoots?

However, I suggest you remain cool as a cucumber, as we never know what tom -orrow might bring. If he is still shit next season, we could always sell him to the Spuds!!

In conclusion, don't you think it's time to turnip in? (yeah, I realise I'm struggling!!).
