There is an irony to someone posting on a thread asking for people to let said thread die

Thought someone might say that but it was the top thread at the time so I thought what harm!

This post however has bumped it, which does defeat the purpose :banghead:

So again I plea for it to be locked so it can be wiped from memory.

30 PAGES ON THE CL FINAL!!!!! :banghead:

I'm gonna start a Joe Cole type thread to rival it.
Time to move on. The euphoria will die down and then we have a whole 12 months of laughing at clubs who play on a Thursday night :barscarf:

I was just thinking about Wenger's proud boast that Arsenal have been in the Champions League for 15 years in a row.

Now, that is an achievement, but now that the chavs have won the thing, that means that since we started qualifying for the competition, all our main English rivals, United (2), Liverpool (1) and Chelsea (1), have all won it.

Not only that, but so have all our main European rivals - Real Madrid (2), Barca (3), Inter (1), Milan (2) and Bayern (1)... hell, even Porto have won it.

So, by my reckoning, Arsenal and Juventus are the biggest clubs not to have won it since Wenger's Arsenal started qualifying in 1998. After that, the biggest clubs not to have won it since '98 are probably Valencia, Roma, Ajax, etc. who, for differing reasons, are (in my opinion) not in the same boat as Arsenal and Juve.

We've only been to 1 final, too. That's less than Liverpool (2), Chelsea (2), Valencia (2) and the same as Monaco, Inter and Leverkusen (1 each). And, obviously, the bigger clubs like United, Real, Milan, Barca and Bayern have been in several finals in that time.

So basically, we've been in the thing every year, but rarely done anything of note.Only Juventus have underachieved more than us... and they only have to look back to 1998 when they were in the final 3 years in a row, and won it once.

Why don't the media challenge his poor CL league record? and why, when he know's it's so poor, does he bring up his qualifying record so often? I'd be ashamed to do so in his position.

Great post mate and what some of us have been saying for a while. The smoke screen from Wenger has been what a fantastic record it has been qualifying from the Group stage to the knockouts every season since 'x'. The issue with that is clubs like Man United may well have failed in the Group stages now twice in the last few years but between that have been winning it or finished runners-up / semi-finalists. Personally I'd be delighted to fuck up in the groups a couple of times but have that proud gold star over the badge sometime soon.

When you consider that Leverkusen and Monaco have as many finals it shows you that once the cup becomes a knockout format the skill of the manager takes over. Isn't that why people love teams like APOEL reaching the QF last year? We all know that they may never do it again but shows that it doesn't have to be the wealthiest 8 clubs that make the QFs, nor the wealthiest 2 that contest the final.

Considering we have such a long running record of making the last 16, the conversion rate to even the SF stage (twice) is shocking

Yes. One final out of 15 or 16 attempts is probably more down to the law of averages than the talent of the coach.

Leverkusen have been to as many finals from 8 attempts.Valencia and Liverpool twice from less attempts than us. And didn't Leeds make it all the way to the semi in their only CL season? (could be wrong)

For Arsenal to be considered a truly great club, we need European pedigree. We need a European Cup to our name. Under Wenger, I'm not sure that's possible... 15 or 16 failed attempts is surely enough?

Arsene, thanks for the memories but it's time to say goodbye.
