Arsenal were the first team to take the Shed in early seventies, Arsenal old boys will telll you that they did it two years on the trot, The Chelsea old boys will only admit to the once. Also Arsenal took all three ends at Tottenham for about 6 years on trot from about 67 onwards and Johnny Hoys mob came very close to taking the West Ham North Bank around 69-70ish, West Ham had the help of Tottenham that day.

Are you talking about the whole shed?

During my time (from 67 to about72) we used to take half the shed every single time. I'd love to think we cleared them out completely later on.

The Totts were never a big problem in those days.

I had a few worrying moments at west ham though.

Wallsall were in the Clock end and given the left of the clock spurs came in before we arrived .....there were none of either in the North Bank

As Arsenal came in at the usual 2.45 we knew Spurs were in the clock , the OB had even made a section for them to the right of the clock,a small but nasty 8 got in behind them and scattered them down the stairs ,they tried to get into the Walsall section to the left of the clock ,Walsall slapped them as well and when they went to run right they walked straight into the Clock end mob who chased them down the tunnel and out of the ground although many were caught at the turnstiles .........it took less than 2 mins to clear them .

Chelsea came into the clock end but into the wolves section to the left , Arsenal were prevented by plod from going under the stairs at them so they got away with it until the end when they got legged everywhere !

The shed was taken several times the last being about 1972 although as someone points out Chelsea dont like admitting it whereas they never tire of telling ius about boxing day 77 !
I can remember going to spurs and having mobs in the shelf paxton and the park lane but that turned in 73/74 and after that Spurs started coming in the North Bank and took it more than once in the 70's and even early 80's they were a horrific mob .

More great history. Thanks fellas.

I find it quite surprising that Chelsea FC has an official support for "The Shed" (shed.chelseafc.com) when most teams try to distance themselves from the days of violence at games.

The shed was an area of the ground bit like the North Bank at Highbury

First went away to the swamp in 72 and Arsenal were all over the place, Paxton, Shelf and Park Lane. Remember queueing outside the Paxton with my mate when a huge mob of Arsenal turned the corner from T*******m high road, one of the most impressive mobs I've ever seen at football and think we heard them coming for five minutes beforehand headed by a tall skinny black guy who always wore a tonic jacket and plain red woollen hat. He seemed to be up the front of most things in my early days, never did know his name and I can't remember seeing him again after about 74. It was pretty similar there for the next two seasons and as I remember, it really turned in the 75/76 season when for the first time I felt less comfortale there especially going back up to Seven Sisters after.

I do remember Tottenham encountering an equally horrific mob of gooners on the right hand side of the North Bank in 1984 to the point on health and safety grounds they never bothered the North bank again. Like Chelsea they can
recall their moments of glory on the North Bank but for some reason the encounter in 1984 never took place as the game
was all ticket.

Remember that one well 8) the day we knew that the tide had well and truly turned back in our favour after them being well on top in the second half of the 70s and early 80s. The perfect day really, warm spring sunshine and Charlie Nicholas scoring "that goal" :D :D :D in a 3-2 win 8)

I was in the North Bank that day, right in the middle. I always used to think that Nicholas' goal was one of the best bits of skill I'd seen, and just for you youngsters here is what us old bastards are talking about!!

Drawing the dribbling line Brady took before scoring a great goal was not what my mates wanted to know during those dull physics lessons, where the Arsenal mobs where situated around the away fans was of far more importance, hence I can remember some these incidents very well but ohms law escapes me.

We had played Wolves the week before the cup game and I believe it ended in a dull draw, as with most League games no away fans were present on the clockend this being largely down to the complete lack of segregation. Nearly all the other clubs by now had some form of fencing to keep the fans apart, not the clockend, this made it one of the most hostile ends in the country for an away supporter. Wolves did bring a coach load down that sat in the mainstand and to hoots of laughter from both North bank and Clockend an Arsenal old codger and a Wolves old codger had a punch up, “Mainstand Mainstand do your job” sang the North Bank.

The cup in those days was totally different to today, I strode onto the North Bank a week later looked down to the Clockend and saw a Gold and Black army of about 4,000, and thought boy its going to go off today. The ground filled and at the usual time of 10 mins to three the surge to the left hand side of the Wolves fans appeared , the North bank cheered loudly and sang “Clockend Clockend do you job” then bang it was off with Arsenal fans steaming straight into the side of the Wolves fans a huge gap appeared and at the same time small groups of Arsenal fans who had infiltrated behind the Wolves fans began punching and kicking their way down the terrace, a smaller mob of Arsenal then steamed in from the right hand side causing complete pandemonium. The gap that had appeared just filled with Arsenal fans punching and kicking away, wolves were game though and fighting back, it was time for the OB to make their move. They went straight into the Arsenal fans on the left and pushed them back about 20 yards from the wolves mob, time for one lone Arsenal fan to make his move, he ran across the open terrace and with five yards to go took off and drop kicked into the Wolves fans, he got the best cheer of the day from the North Bank. The fighting calmed down as the game got underway, enter Chelsea. It looked as if they had tried to steer clear of the Wolves fans by standing as far to the right as possible, what they did not appear to know was a small mob of Arsenal that had been fighting wolves earlier were much closer so when they hoisted their scalves in the air and began to sing Chelsea, within seconds they were being steamed into. The Clockend from the North Bank looked like a war zone, with a line of police between the arsenal fans and the Chelsea fans another line of police between those same arsenal fans and the wolves fans and on the left hand side another line of police between the Wolves fans and the other larger mob of Arsenal fans. If it happened today it would be front page news for a week, back then not a mention.

That was my memory of the day from the North Bank as a kid of 13.

Man utd that year at Highbury was pretty hot do you remember?

Think it was 81 when Spurs completely took over Highbury. They were battling with Liverpool for the title when they beat us 3-1 (Crooks and "You're just a Scottish Jew" - remember him?) and also reached 2 cup finals. They had the whole clock end and near on half the NB. Was one of those days when they did take the piss.

Think that one was a year later in 82, remember it because it was at the start of the Falklands war and the N17 vermin had the wanker ardiles and the cocksucker villa at the time and they were singing "Argentina" fucking scum that they are. You're right about them taking the piss that day tho, think we just about stopped them from taking the middle of the NB but only just. Bad day all round really :?

I have always given Spurs credit for taking the North Bank, 76 -81. 82 was the damaging year for the Spurs mob in my opinion, they won 3-2 but basically only took where they stood and Arsenal held their own. From then on we knew were better. In 83 at White hart lane no more hiding no more walking to the ground with heads down it was bold as brass swanning up the high road like we own the place and skirmishing in their parts of the ground. 83 at Highbury from memory the only ever all ticket match on Boxing Day was a non-event. 84 Highbury it was good night Vienna for the spurs mob forever on the North Bank.
Now does anybody know of a spurs fan that admits to 84? The ones I encounter claim the game was all ticket "to prevent spurs from taking the North bank" Chuckle

“That's the all ticket game as Spurs were given the whole of the clock end”
