Which defeat hurt you the most?

Getting pumped by United at the Emirates in the semis for the CL a few years ago was particularly tough. That's the first one that jumped to mind. After watching Ronaldo hit that fucking ridiculous 40 yard strike in to make it 2-0 and 3-0 on aggregate (if memory serves) I was completely dejected. Especially because their first goal was on a Gibbs slip, totally unlucky for the very raw lad.

As a school kid, losing 5-0 at WHL in the 80s. We got hammered and so did i by Spurs mates for some time afterwards.

More recent, the 8-2 at United was shocking as were several FA cup defeats at United and Stoke where the manager and team clearly weren't trying or bothered.

I am with you on this one sammy - as time goes on the pain of some defeats will ease as the newer painful defeats take centre stage in our minds but I think it will take a long time for this defeat to ease from my mind  Somebody has already said that the game where we conceded a pen 8 mins into inj time v the victims sums up the modern day AFC team but for me the 2-3 defeat versus the scum is more accurate - a game where we were totally on top only to crumble after the first scum goal went in and that summed up the gutless and weak shower of c**ts that represent us nowadays. I would say that walking away from the ground that day was the sorest I have ever felt and my need to take that anger out on somebody was neatly summed up by my verbal backlash at one of the ground crew at stanstead airport as our plane was loading

The cup semi replay at villa pk v the manc c**ts left me absolutely despondent leaving the ground - to be that close to beating them only to blow it knocked me for six cos I never seen it coming tbh :o The wife's cousin collected us that night after we left the ground (we were staying in birmingham at his place) and I wasnt able to talk the whole way back out to his gaff
I suppose it was a similar reaction that day the scousers robbed us in cardiff - we were absolutely miles better than them that day and to this day I am still baffled as to how we lost it (although TH having another one of his cup final 'mares def played a big part). I cant remember if that was the final that I travelled back to london on the train or the bus (was at the chav and manure finals too) but I do remember the queue to get on the bus/train that day was absolutely muted and we had to wait ages as well

A lot of the modern day losses dont hurt as much as embarass me - the 8-2 debacle in mancland, the 4-4 in geordieland, the 4-2 reverse v blackburn were all shocking results but not totally unexpected either  I remember crying my eyes out after the ipswich cup final in '78 as I never entertained the idea that we would lose that one being the naive 8 year old I was

I have to say of all the defeats covered on this thread the 8-2 was by far the most embarrassing of the lot
That's the only game I've never seen the goals from. I don't remember anything of the game and am really quite glad of it
oh yeah there's a video of you pissed out of your head, isn't there  even more pissed than Norwich
You mean there's evidence of me getting pissed at football :rubchin: :rubchin: Nah.

I knew we were going to get absolutely murdered by United so I thought I'd join the team in getting hammered
So what was your excuse for Norwich? [/quote]

No food for 24 hours + Arsenal Away is a bad combination.

Mine would be the 0-1 defeat at Elland Road in the second lasty game of the 98-99 season. We were so close to retaining the title. We were the better team but they got a late goal after Nutty got injured and his replacement Vivas failed to track a cross allowing Hasselbaink a free header. I was in bits after it, despite our proud history we hadn't retained a trophy since the 30's and didn't until the FA Cup in 2003.
Others 91 semi- final...Benfica in 91 , we were sure that we could rule Europe....Luton '88 , bad enough losing a final but to them!!!...FA Cup Final in 2001, so much better than them and I had to listen to a load of plastic victim fans at a function..and so many more.

Yep, that was a massive turning point for both clubs that season. I reckon, if we'd won that, we'd have won the double again... as it were, we gave United the momentum they needed to win the treble :(

I wasn't born or wasn't old enough for some of the final defeats previously mentioned, so..

United away in 2004, our unbeaten run ended by Rooney's first of many dives against us, and still people refer to that game as the end point of that run yet fail to mention the dive as well as Ferdinand's last man pull on Freddie when he was clean through, which should have been a red card and would have been nowadays. Robbed.

Not an actual defeat but might as well have been, Brum in 2008. Not only the leg break but the diving *word censored* that won the penalty in injury time as well as the other diving *word censored* that won the free-kick for their first goal . If we had won that game which we should have, then we would probably have won the league that year and everything would be so different now. Who would have thought we'd have four draws in a row starting with that one?

CL Final in 06, I think it was treated by some people as good Arsenal vs evil Barcelona, I still remember Sol's celebration after his goal, it was one of the most endearing thing's I'd ever seen from a footballer.

5-1 away to Spurs in 2008, I know it was only the CC and we played half a reserve team (as much as they like to deny that), but after nine years of no defeats to them and to a scoreline like that, I was ripped to shreds the next day by everyone I came across, even people who didn't like football knew about it and proceeded to take the piss like never before.

Birmingham last year, more because of how we lost it and to a team as shit as them, the utter lack of noise from our end as well which was highlighted made it more embarassing.

8-2 vs United, the entire football world laughed at us and just after every goal I remember seeing Wenger's fucking face come up on the screen and you just knew he still wouldn't make the required signings. Again, people who didn't even like football knew about that defeat and that was the most embarassing day in my life as a Gooner.

4-2 vs Liverpool in 2008, again robbed by a Babel dive right after Walcott's run as well.

2-1 vs United in 2008, the culmination of our title challenge and just more heartbreak.

Away to Wrexham in 1991/92

Us league champions them finished bottom of div 4 (as was) the previous season.

We lost 2-1 after taking the lead and to top it all had a valid equalizer by Jimmy Carter ruled out :banghead:

That was one hell of a long train ride home from Wales.

I even had the piss ripped out of me by non-football fans, who knew fuck all about the game.

99 FA Cup semi-final replay

2004 ECL against Chelsea

2008 ECL against Liverpool

The defeats in 99 and 2004 stopped us from having a truly great Arsenal side, one that retained titles and won the European Cup.
